I think this was also mentioned in rolling stone or vibe back then too, that rock your body was for mj. Maybe if it was his, there would have been no Janet super bowl fiasco

Yup, a bunch of the songs on Justified were presented to MJ's management but they thought they weren't right for Michael. The only Pharrell-written song Michael is believed to have worked on is What's a guy gotta do which was recorded by Usher. Some people believe Michael would have sounded trashy singing those songs, but I would have loved to hear Michael laying down a falsetto vocal on a Pharell beat.

He would have sounded like he’s influenced by his own work, Justin and the producers admitted to listening to off the wall a lot while making the album, though he acted like an asshole later saying Fred Astaire inspired him. Love his music but horrible attitude

Pharrell(whom I met at an ULTRA private screening) is VERY zen & was a pleasure to meet.

I bet Pharrell offered Prince(r.i.p.) his hit "Frontin" everybody tells me Prince(r.ip.) should have recorded it. I'm glad he didn't.

I always kind of knew I would. I'm glad divine intervention happened. He has a GREAT spirit about him. I met Janelle Monae the same night.

That's cool. I've seen Janelle perform with Prince(r.i.p.) on one of his tours. I much prefer her as an actress than a singer. The camera loves her. Plus she is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!

I agree...Michael was a fool for turning down that jam.To me,those Pharrell songs are better than the stuff that Rodney Jerkins came up with. That's my main criticism of the Invincible album: the uptempo songs aren't that great.

True that. Those Rodney Jerkins tracks except Unbreakable are meh. Pharell sound would have been refreshing. I would have let Teddy handle production even at the risk of sounding dated over Rodney Jerkins beats.

It may have sounded dated if teddy did more work on it. He did well on the few tracks he did. I’m also thinking maybe mj kept tabs on prince and didn’t like his Neptune’s work

i always thought Rodney Jerkins was overrated...his tracks all sound so industrial and herky-jerky (no pun intended). i didnt even really like the stuff he did with Brandy. she shouldve stayed with Keith Crouch and Rashaan Patterson from her debut album, or did more than the couple of great joints she did with Kanye

I think he’s good and love his work with brandy, Toni Braxton, destinys child, etc

Rodney(whom I sat right next to @ The Grammy's) did his BEST work with Brandy. Which is why she was HIGHLY pissed when he started working with other artist. Because she felt he was giving her sound away & they fell out.

And I thought he held off his best work for brandy by not giving stronger melodies and futuristic sounds as much to spice girls and mj.

That’s awesome you saw him though

Pharell wouldn't have solved the main problem with Invincible, that is that there is way too much low tempos compared to uptempos.
.
Jerkins did great things in Invincible : the eponymous track, Heartbreaker, YRMW and Threatened. And great tracks that weren't published at the time : We ve had Enough and Xscape.
He also did the terrible Privacy. Unbreakable wasn't maybe a masterpiece, but the synthclavier sounded like it was a Bad outtake, especially the outro.
.
Pharell's work with JT was just ok rnb. I agree the best Pharell track is Rock Your Body, but I don't think it was proposed to MJ. Rock Your Body would have been better than Privacy I agree.
.
But the best track of Justified was Cry Me a River, and it wasn't a Pharell track.
.
I think the best producer for Invincible would have been Outkast.
.
And make unreleased MJ compositions remixed, such as the punchy and funky Sunset Driver, Streetwalker or Got the Hots.
MJ was always his best provider of hits, written and composed by himself.
.
It was a huge artistic and commercial mistake to get away from that successful formula.

Brandy album was a piece of crap.
What about us was interesting ( it would have been better than Privacy), the European remix of Full Moon ( not Jerkins' IIRC) was great, the instru with MJ'voice...well there is MJ'voice and that s all.
.
The rest is boring amd the same rnb crap for teenagers that was all over the place at the time.

I agree we’ve had enough was his best composition, and wish I heard more of mj on the album than the producers output. But it makes sense that he wanted many books in the kitchen cause that’s how off the wall and thriller were for the most part except for the self-written tunes, which were the best

The title track was produced by mike city, not darkvhild, maybe that’s why you liked it. To be fair, I liked brandy for much of my teenage life, so we naturally drawn to the album and enjoy the sounds they worked with. I would even go as far as saying better than never say never

I guess his heart just wasn't really in it. He already said when HIStory was released, that he wasn't sure that he would release another album. Also from '97 on he was a "young" single father with 2 children and a third on the way. I guess that clearly was his priority and not making music, hence only 2 songs songs soley written by him and the others almost done by comitee.

Yes, but he had unreleased stuff that could have been remixed/updated with new producers.
Apparently, Jerkins did an updated version of Cheater, but the story doesn't say if MJ did new vocals for it.
He also remixed old stuff such as DSTYGE, maybe as a demo to show to Michael how he could update his sound.
