Career decade preference for Donna Summer!

If you point a gun to my head and ask me who is my favourite artist of all time. Well... Donna Summer is the one. Brilliant vocalist, writer, a definition of a game changer with hits like Love To Love You Baby, I Feel Love She Work's Hard For The Money etc etc, saw her live in the 70s and have met her and she was the nicest person I've met. So many classic albums as well from 75-89.

Now question.

70s or 80s era fellas?

Yeah I thought it was a catchy tune. Was listening to a lot of Rihanna and Jody watley that summer and those songs fit in nicely when played back to back

I think I liked her since the 90s cause of she works hard for the money and started playing her regulary sometime in 2006/07 after enjoying madonnas disco music on confessions on a dancefloor. I had right stuff and I feel love on a cd I burned

Lol you mean Hot Stuff?

I don't know what happened to her career throughout the 90s, the only time I ever heard from her again in mainstream was the vh1 live encore show, Was that when you became a fan of her's?

Because mainstream wise she was gone, always wondered what happened then

Yeah she seemed really underrated. Was kind of sad when she passed away, people seemed to know who she was when she went

Her 70s music was truly groundbreaking. She and her producers Giorgio Morodaer and Pete Bellotte created some truly unique and bold music. It took disco music to new heights.1977’s “I Feel Love” is perhaps the first real techno song.

Her 80s albums are kinda spotty, but there a few classics on those albums too.

I got myself in trouble with school due to my addiction with I Feel Love because I would always skip my class so I can hear it over and over again on vinyl

She was a great singer! And a Capricorn!

Remember the duet she did with Barbara Striesand, "No More Tears(enough is enough") - a fabulous disco song! The song was released in 1979.

Yeah I totally do! Those were such fun times. I even skipped class to catch mj on trl when invincible came out. And on the days I had spare period and lunch back to back, I would go to the big cd stores downtown and listen to albums and buy them. It was around that time I heard princes rainbow children though I couldn’t get into it musically

Prince's Rainbow Children is a very strange album, I'm not surprised you couldn't get into it tbh lol. I grew up with Jehova witness family members so I personally loved it.

That’s interesting! I wonder if I would like it now if I gave it another chance. Used to not be fond of princes 90s material but now I like some of it a lot

IMO her stongest material was in the 70s, but my all-time fav song of Donna's is The Wanderer and that was released in 1980 https://www.youtube.com/w...NRIPjmJaIM

Donna Summer had some great songs thoughout all of her working decades. I always liked that song she has with Barbara Streisand and I love her version of RKO.

I've heard that Diana Ross hated her back in the day and dismissed her as low class and tacky

I don't think Diana Ross liked anybody. I loved Donna back in the day. I remember watching her prime time TV ABC music special back then.

I love Donna's 70's music. I remember dancing at the discos to I Feel Love. That song would get everyone up on the dance floor.

Maybe Diana Ross felt that way about her back in the 70's. Diana had been on the block for sometime and all of the sudden, this new sexy, sultry singer (with a powerful voice) comes along and becomes a hit (and competition).....Marvin Gaye kind of felt the same way about Teddy Pendergrass and our man P.........Also ironic how Diana dated Gene Simmons (of KISS) and Donna sang background vocals ("Burning Up With Fever") on his 1978 solo album.

Since this thread is still active I want to ask Donna Summer fans this question.

What in the giant fuck happened to her career throughout the 90s-00s? Musically she was pretty much gone, Mistaken Identity was a massive flop, Crayons did okay but throughout the 70s - 80s (80-84 to be exact) she was amazing and huge.

After Another Time and Place (her last high profile moment) throughout the 90s and onwards she was gone and then I'm reading new information about how she wanted to do this Ordinary Broadway Girl story about her life throughout the mid to late 90s but never happened, and then I recently found out she was suppose to release this album called "Angel" in 2000 or 2003 I believe but never happened.

Recently I've been reading old magazine interviews related to Donna summer and she always told them "Well we're working on a new album" blah blah blah she always kept saying this for many years but it never happened.

So my question is... What happened throughout the 90s and 00s?

There is a musical based on her life that was touring the country before Covid hit...
