christmas songs are some of the saddest most depressing songs ever...

Little Drummer Boy? sad depressing story over a sad melody about a broke ass boy with no gifts to bring

Silent Night?.. sad depressing drab melody, and vague lyrics about an alleged "savior" birth in a manger...in late DECEMBER...in Bethlehem....yeak OK right

I wrote a Christmas song 21 years ago, and it’s also kind of sad.

I wrote this when 16 and turned it into a song with a killer bassline and strings inspired by mjs who is it. I also performed it at the school Christmas concert and got good feedback

It was Christmas Eve
I was feeling lonely
All I could envision was
You with me
Maybe there is hope
A Christmas miracle
Without you in my life
I feel miserable

Christmas candles in the sky
Burning bright
Candles in the sky shining
with the moonlight
If I could make a wish
And blow out the flame
You and I would be
One and the same

I’ll be getting presents
Just the way I do every year
But the only gift I need
Is you and me forever
You are number one
On my Christmas list
All I really need is
A granted wish

Chorus again

The clouds in the sky
Have bursted
It is snowing
But the clouds in my eyes
Are raining tears
It’s christmas
Please come to me
Without you I feel unhappy
Cause it’s you I need in my life
By my side

Chorus twice

You need to cop the Motown compilation A Motown Christmas . To be sure, there are some gloomy songs there but not many.

You should also try out "Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern)" by Miles Davis.

I love Christmas season music, hearing those songs during the season, brings me right back to childhood times, when life was fun and carefree, and the time of year when kids were so happy and excited about Christmas. biggrin

What I like about Christmas music is the range of styles you can listen to. Sure it can be depressing or religious but there're so much more than that.

Jazz version of Silent Night or the swing version of Rudolph. Love the soul classics and some country versions. Brian Setzer made it his thing and it's awesome.

This is an endless list of great songs but it's the thing I love the most about this genre.

One of my favorites is The Temptations “Silent Night”....the 1980 version.

I agree that some Christmas songs are kinda depressing....especially that “Christmastime” song that we hear in the Charlie Brown Christmas episode (the melody is sad to me) biggrin or the Emotions’ “What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?”.

Another favorite is “Give Love On Christmas Day”,which I recall hearing in the Jackson Five Christmas album in the early 70s.

For the past 5 years or so, my favorite thing about "Christmas season music" is the Holiday Soul channel on SiriusXM.

Granted, there are only so many versions of "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" or "This Christmas" that I can stand in a given hour and some artists just aren't the "Christmas season music" type, like Keith Sweat, but I love when they throw in some James Brown, Nat King Cole, Lou Rawls, or anything that's old Motown.

ps:

Chuck Brown's go-go Christmas cd is still my all time favorite.

I love Christmas music by Nancy Wilson. I always get an urban suburban upper middle class worldly woman living out life vibe from her music. Even with it's standards Christmas, it feels like adult Christmas parties

Yeah, the get togethers are (or should I were) nice, another thing I remember from Christmas back in the day. In my day, on Christmas day, people used to just go around from one place to the next, just visiting one another, sharing joy and happiness. Sadly now, we're expected to "social distance" from everyone, in which has made everyone unhappy and depressed. I so miss the days of old. sad

My grandma on my mom's side used to iron clothes and babysit the kids in the neighborhood. This was when my mother was a kid. One of the children she watched was a girl named Gayla Peevy. Gayla sang, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" so that's one of my go-to songs. It's a staple in our family.

Also, being from Oklahoma, a local jewelry shop has a Christmas jingle every year that is... if you're Oklahoman, you know the song. It signals the holiday. The BC Clark Anniversary Sale song is a MUST for me. Meghan Mullullay, from Will & Grace, was on The Tonight Show once and talked about it and sang it.

Others on my list:

Amy Grant - Emmanuel

Amy Grant - Little Town (segues from the previous)

Michae W. Smith - Jingle Bells

Whitney Houston - Do You Hear What I Hear

Amy Grant - Sleigh Ride

Michael W. Smith - It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Mariah Carey (also Pointer Sisters) - Santa Claus is Comin' To Town

Donny Hathaway - This Christmas

John Lennon - Happy Christmas (War is Over)

Michael W. Smith - Glorida

Wham! - Last Christmas

Madonna - Santa Baby

Mariah Carey - Joy To The World

Ariana Grande - Santa Tell Me

Whitney Houston - I Go To The Rock

Burl Ives - Holly Jolly Christmas

Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree

Thurl Ravenscroft - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland

Bob Rivers - Walking 'Round In Women's Underwear

Barbra Streisand - Jingle Bells?

U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Lucille Ball - We Need A Little Christmas (from Mame)

Rosemary Clooney - Baby, It's Cold Outside (don't give me your rapey bullshit)

Ella Fitzgerald - Let it Snow!

Julie Andrews - My Favorite Things

I agree, some Christmas songs are kinda depressing, but I think that's because of past Christmas times, memories of childhood times, a time when everyone we loved and knew was alive and well. I think it turns sad because of loss, loved ones that has passed and no longer here, just in memory...at least that's how it is for me.

IMHO she recorded the best version of "The Christmas Waltz", and her song "That's What I Want For Christmas" is one of my all-time favorites.
