Who's decline in the music world made you feel depressed the most as a fan?

I'm going with Prince. That man was the king of music throughout the 1980s. After the 80s... He was just awful. He never recovered after SOTT.

I still ask myself to this day how did he go from a classic perfect song like When Doves Cry to a song like My Name Is Prince? 😂

What about you guys and gals?

Granted, My Name Is Prince is embarassing, but he did have some quality moments in the 90s too.

Definitely Prince. Everybody else either retired and artists like Ronald Isley and Charlie Wilson continued on but sold out completely on every single song so I dropped them immediately. You can't be disappointed with someone when you completely drop them and no longer listen to or buy their music. Prince, on the other hand, still continued making enough good music to keep me hanging on. He was the only one to continue making funk but unfortunately, he made sellout tracks too, which was very disappointing. And what I would find hilarious with him is when he would get on his rants when it didn't sell and start preaching about "real music by real musicians" and then on the very next album you would hear a sellout track like "Laydown", "Valentina", or "Ole Skool Company" which would be exactly the type of stuff that he had preached against. That made him sound about as believable as Donald Trump. lol

Andy is a four letter word.

I'll be honest. The only highlights of his 90s era was D&P. He was pretty huge again and it was his last high profile moment up to that point until Musicology was out.

When mjs reputation took a hit and he was going through different things in the 00s, I felt so sorry for him and missed getting new music from him

I guess Whitney - she basically purposely destroyed her voice. By the end of her life she could barely speak let alone sing. As someone who had a voice that was so incredible it was definitely depressing.

You might not have liked P's songs but he never dropped his vocal or playing ability.

Sly Stone.
Without his affair with drugs, he would have ruled the 80's.
I do think his albums until 1975 were great, but he would have been on the verge of catching the good sound to define the next decade.
( Not mentioning that his music was hugely sampled in the 86/93 era in the hip hop. )
.
I can't imagine what Sly could have done with 80's linn drum for instance.
MJ and Prince, who were his spiritual children, could have done something for him or with him musically, instead of sh it-ing in his face.
.

Yeah, Sly Stone. I agree with what the others are saying about Prince, but he still made good songs and his live shows were great. So I can't say that I felt depressed about that, maybe a bit confused or disappointed sometimes. With Sly, yes it really does make you sad to see how deep he has fallen. His comeback tour in 2007 only underlined that.

Michael Jackson, whose decline for me started once he started lipsynching 99% of his shows from the early 90's onwards. It was depressing. I felt it was a rip-off.

Yeah, I hated that whole lip syncing shit he did throughout the 90s. Despite his success with albums and singles in the 90s. That decade was a dark time for Michael Jackson

The Dangerous tour was at least half live. He performed 16 songs on the setlist, 8 of which were 100% live:

Startin Somethin

Human Nature

She's Out My Life

I Just Can't Stop Loving You

J5 Medley

Billie Jean

Beat It

Working Day & Night

Half of MITM was also live

It wasn't until the HIStory tour where the lip-synching was on most of the songs.

Beastie Boys. To The 5 Boroughs (2004) was admittedly made in a depressing post-9/11 era from a group of New York natives. Though they had pioneered a sparse (short samples) thumping (808) style in the 1980s, the percussion on that album just sounds dull. I might be able to pull up some org posts where I am defending it but I was just fooling myself. After that album, I didn't follow them at ALL!

For you to make that statement. I have to ask, were you even alive to understand why us first generation Prince fans love his 80s era the most and understand why we were frustrated with his 90s work?

Doubt it, that statement you posted made me lose a few braincells.

Just out of curiosity. Why are you having a piss fit about this? I stated how I felt about the latter part of his career. Move on.

Not sure why you duobt it, i know my own age.

It's interesting why you don't answer my question.

You complain about getting depressed about Prince not releasing better albums after he out out 7 fantastic albums. You even make fun about "My name is Prince".

So again, what do you do in your lifetime?

If you are speaking of a musical decline (sales, voice, quality of music), I can't really think of anyone. Every artist has or will decline at some point. I don't expect anyone to stay at the top of the game forever.

I'll go with Natalie Cole. Those dark years from 1981 - 1985 were pretty disappointing 4 me. I kept wishing and praying she'd hit the top of the charts (again), but it didn't happen really till "Jump Start." I wish she had her shit 2gether at Epic cuz they dumped her after only one album. It was rumored that she was gonna be paired up with Teena Marie (producing), but it never happened because of her downward spiral with drugs/rehab attempts. sad

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

How did you feel when she made a comeback in the 90s?

You can easily date back to the early 90s when that whole allegation period happened. He wasn't the same after that. The 90s and 00s were dark eras for Michael Jackson despite having great success in the 90s too. It was a sad thing to watch
