What's the best band ever?

Only one choice allowed! No runners up, no top ten, no top three, no honourable mentions, only one! Your favourite band ever! Backup bands like the E Street Band or The Revolution also count.
Mine is Sly & the Family Stone, the way they combined pop and soul music was Fantastic and Sly was one great songwriter.

The 1993-1996 line-up of the New Power Generation.

They were fantastic. Incredibly tight, incredibly versatile, incredible chemistry and they sounded so great. I liked his other bands, too, and I know the Lovesexy/SOTT band was probably more inspiring and creative but this incarnation of the NPG was phenomenal and were able to play a huge repertoire of songs.

I'ma go with those 4 dudes from Liverpool

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yeah, that stripped down version of the NPG was probably the funkiest band he ever had. Sonny & Michael were a humping, bumping and stomping rhythm section! It was just a shame that they used so many samples.

I've considered the bands listed, and then I thought further - who is still together? Who's doing stuff out there?

Then I thought, oh. Fleetwood Mac. Everyone had such a different musical skill, style, and aesthetic. Together they made some incredible stuff.

Yes, the samples were a tad too much for my taste as well but I´ve seen a couple of aftershows were they didn´t use those samples as heavily, for example the Paradiso aftershow, and I think they were his funkiest and most versatile band.

Impossible for me to say best-----too subjective, too many different parameters, and not enough common frames of reference---

...

...

but my favorite band would probably be Earth Wind and Fire...

....probably....

...although some others could fit into that spot.....

Alice in Chains - great songs, killer guitar riffs and amazing harmonies between Layne & Jerry. Layne was one of rock's greatest vocalists.

Even when artists like Prince and Stevie weren't advertised as being part of a band (ie. NPG or Wonderlove), they've still toured with some of the tightest bands I've ever seen - large ones too.

Band of Gypsys! Yeah! Good choice. It was a shame that they never really became a band for all sorts of reasons that had nothing to do with the music.
