Not having a strong voice doesn't mean that you can't sing. To say that Janet can't sing is ludicrous. Like I said, it's about the emotion and energy with certain singers than it is their actual vocal ability. Beyonce (here we go...), as an example, is a great vocalist and many would say a good singer but as prominent as she's been in the R&B community, she lacks the soul and passion associated with the genre despite being technically talented. On the other side you got someone like Post Malone... personally, I do not get this dude's appeal. Never mind that he looks homeless (and sings like it), I just don't get what people see in him as an artist. Recently, I got into a small exchange with some rando on Facebook who claimed that he (Post) was "the best singer" out there. Even in a music scene where we have a huge scarcity of actual vocalists, we got someone like Ariana Grande (who I mentioned as a counterpoint) and Rihanna (who he mentioned to try and counter my counterpoint), he (sorta) stood by Post being the best one out there. Apparently some people think he has what passes for "soul" these days which is why he can sound like he does yet get a pass because of his alleged emotive depth. I find it morbidly interesting how it seems those same people who might undermine Janet and Madonna's accomplishments and talents because they aren't great vocalists will turn around and use the "vocalist VS singer" argument in defense of somebody now who offers the same or even far less as a singer (technically AND emotively).

Not sure why there is so much discussion and hand-wringing over 4 mediocre singers.
-Billie Holiday
-Amy Winehouse
-Patsy Cline
-Maria Callas
-Aretha
I guess the thread is about the Cindy L, Janet etc., but I hope we know they were very average.

You are right. I am sort of cranky as I am concerned that folks may think these singers are more than they are. That's all.

The women you mention above have enormous talent. I'm a huge fan of all of them. Amy Winehouse was so unique. It's a shame drugs and alcohol took her away so young. [Edited 11/14/20 9:49am]

You must be new here. Because other than maybe Aretha, starting a thread about any of the others will likely get crickets. But Madonna & Janet threads are usually popular. At one point, anything about a member of the Jackson family could only be posted in a sticky thread, which was confusing to read. Individual threads would get closed by a mod. Cyndi Janet Madonna . . . . . Paula. She's not a singer anyway. She's a dancer who capitalized on her popularity. Shit, even Cat couldn't ge her record released, and Paula did?! Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Toni Basil, Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Watley, Jermaine Stewart, The Good Girls, etc were all originally dancers before making a record. They all came from Soul Train, except Toni. Toni did appear on Soul Train in the 1970s with her dance crew The Lockers. Toni was in The Monkees movie Head, dancing with Davy Jones. Patrice Rushen was also a Soul Train dancer in the early 1970s. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Not having a strong voice doesn't mean that you can't sing. To say that Janet can't sing is ludicrous. I know you know I wasn't being entirely serious, at least about one of them. You usually say so-and-so can't sing and everybody knows what you mean by that. There's an implicit comparison in there. I love Janet's music but for me part of the appeal of her music is the music itself. She can sing but her vocals are weak and usually drowned out by the beat. I love her though. I personally don't like to use Freddy or Aretha to judge everybody else.
