Jesse Johnson is Bad-Ass As a lifelong P fan, didn't dive very deep into the arists that were considered "Prince Satellites" but recently listened to JJ's "Verbal Penetration" in its entirety and was completely blown away. That's an album you can listen to in its entirety and not encounter a "bad" song. In fact you can not listen to this entire double album and *not* think JJ can stand toe to toe with P on rhythm and lead guitar. It's a refreshing reminder that P was a catalyst for many artists but only a few could stand on their own.

While VP had some really good songs it have some annoying segues where some female voice brags about Jesse and maybe Jesse was as good on rhythm guitar but on lead guitar not even close. I love Jesses music but i did notice that his solos are always on autopilot playing same ol blues cliches and i noticed that Jesse don't listen to background harmonic changes.Prince played so much better lead guitar. there is a reason Prince is regarded to b one of the best guitar players ever and Jesse is not,but even without that i have ears and i can hear what i wrote earlier.

I disagree with you on lead guitar. Jesse is the reason Prince improved his lead guitar skills. Prince knew Jesse was a monster. I listen to both guitar work often. I'll go as far to say that they are close with Jesse even being better. I don't listen just to Jesse's solo music I listen to his production work on other artists as well. If you aren't familiar with the band he produced in 1988 called DaKrash, YouTube it and listen to Wasn't I Good To You, Trapped In Phases, and Feeling Like This. Your neck will never be the same. First thank you for the tip,i checked Da Krash and Jesse played nice solos there and the songs are nice .But did Prince say he got better on guitar because of Jesse?Yeah Prince was all eyes on Jesse during rehearsals with The Time, but i think it was not because of guitar playing. Remember Jesse had the star quality,he already had his trademark color Pink and had pink amps. Prince got better on guitar because of the same reason he got better as a singer, piano ,bass player and a drummer, and the reason is constant practice . I would like you to explain me why you think Jesse is better, and i will tell you why i think Prince was better on guitar. When i listen to Jesse soloing to me it sounds like he don't really listen to harmonic changes that the band plays and instead he plays cliche blues patterns,it sounds like what he plays comes from his hands and not from his hands.Prince is much better at listening at the background for his solos. His melodies are more memorable,he is more precise than Jesse and every note counts. But Jesse was more consistant,he always played good ,Prince was playing very below his standard during 1998-1999 period.Anybody who doubt me can check Prince solo on Jungle Love that he did live with The Time in Vegas 1999 new years eve i think was the date.He was terrible there, yet All Prince guitar solos on Jungle Love from 2007-2012 are much better than Jesse ever played on that song [Edited 10/27/20 12:26pm]

I respectfully disagree. Prince once had Big Chick HANDCUFF Jesse backstage, so He could play Guitar w/The Time! It's in the Original 7ven Documentary. Jesse didn't even have to PLAY Guitar when He auditioned for The Time! And while Jesse was a Member of D'Angelo's Vanguard, He got a Text from Prince that pretty much said "U are so much better than the Company U R in. People wanna see U, Me & Morris. Come see Me. I have something 4 U". Trouble WAS: Jesse was Overseas. Shortly thereafter, Prince was GONE. 2 quote Christopher Tracy, "And that says WHAT"?? Jesse Johnson is BADASS!!! And I wish We'd gotten that "Full-Time" Reunion w/Prince adding a couple Tunes. Maybe there will b "One Mo' Time!!!

Jesse was handcuffer for the prankster reasons not because Prince was envious.Jesse is a badass but Prince is a few levels more badass yeah i'm talking about guitar.Jesse is all about the (pentatonic) box,Prince was more out of the box on guitar. When i listen Jesse i know how hes gonna play, when Prince plays i have no clue where he gonna go next.

Really? As much as I love Prince, I think that Voodoo and Black Messiah (to a lesser extent) are better than anything that Prince did post 1980s, judged as albums. No one could accuse D’Angelo of being prolific, but Voodoo is a masterpiece in my view – holds its own among the best of Prince and Sly Stone.

Rainbow Children alone kills the shit outta those 2 albums andwhile i like D'Angelo his mumbling style of singing is kinda off putting

I don't dislike The Rainbow Children overall, but I guess that we just have different tastes. Voodoo is a far more muscially interesting and consistent album for me.

u guys are making me go give Jesse a REAL look and listen. I didn't track with his solo stuff at all and only know "Can U Help Me" and "Crazy For U" as (forgettable) singles. I enjoyed him on Condensate but apparently I've missed much! thanks!

I agree with phunkdaddy........"Bare My Naked Soul" is great. "Brand New Day" is probably my favorite track...screaming guitar from Jesse on that one.

The whole D'Angelo tapestry is mumbly and sedated. ZzZzzzzzzZzzz. Prince was never boring like that. [Edited 10/30/20 11:46am]

WhisperingD i agree but u know it's cool and hip to say D'angelo did something better than Prince, even Alan Leeds(D'angelos manasger hm hm) was on that train. With The Rainbow Kids alone Prince beats all (3 albums in 26 years of career ) music done by D'angelo

ok, so I literally just road tripped today to The Roll N Roll HoF and I'd heard abt it, seen snippets, but Prince's guitar solo on The Beatles' WMGGW is the CENTERPIECE of the 13 min Power of Rock vid that they show there. At the HoF. With all the legendary inductees. Let that sink in. No way that's Jesse. Or Jesse could be better. I'm still going to holla at his catalogue but I don't think my vote will change. On the nature of what brought De'Mumble-o into this thread. I'm convinced it was P throwing shade ("ur so much better...") cause of D's known issue with drugs (his own medicinal addiction notwithstanding). But now that he's IN the thread, I'm going to do with Vodoo what I did when The Multicolored Youthfusses first came out (yup Vodoo is such a classic that this brotha's never heard it). Ride in my car until I listen in its entirety, TRC wowed me and brought me back from my purple prodigal period. I needed a cigarette after that joint and i'ont even smoke. I swear I don't hear what you guys hear with Rainbow Children. That's among his worst imo. My favorite Prince album is 1999. I wasn't very high on Prince Planet Earth album but I would take that over Rainbow Children easily. [Edited 10/31/20 13:44pm] Don't laugh at my funk

[Edited 10/31/20 13:44pm] My favorite album is 1999 also but how can i deny how amazing The Rainbow Children is.In my opinion that is the only true masterpiece after his 80s golden period. You know when you listen to albums by some artist and you like majority of the songs but there are still some parts that feel disjointed or filler ,TRC don't have those moments.Every note is so well crafted that makes you feel sure that Prince invested a lot of his energy and time in making of that album.Amazing songs and grooves.

TRC is mature musicanship, tight bandleadership, complex song concepts and lyrics with no regard for "pop" radio or catchiness. to compare it to something like 1999 is to expect a teenager to order from the same food menu as a 40 plus year old

Without wishing to derail the thread further, I like its dark, wonky, low-key quality – by that measure you’d probably have to label Sly Stone’s “Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa” as mumbling and sedated. I see it as quite a clear nod to “There’s a Riot Goin On” (which has a similar down-beat quality to it) and the dark, moody sound of Lewis Taylor’s debut. All I know is that in 2000 it sounded far more fresh and interesting to me than Rave did. [Edited 11/1/20 17:18pm]

I guess the way we think of how we experience art (or should) is different. I think we all agree that sequencing is not arbitrary so I'd suggest u listen in order. Weird Vader voice notwithstanding. I endured it and still the brilliance came thru for me. if after u get a feel for the vision/vibe u go back to YOUR faves (not others'), totally understood.
