Favourite male artist, female artist and band of the 1950s-2010s?

Male of the 1950s: Elvis

Female of the 1950s: Mahalia Jackson

Band of the 1950s: The Platters

Male of the 1960s: James Brown

Female of the 1960s: Aretha Franklin

Band of the 1960s: The Doors

Male of the 1970s: Marvin Gaye

Female of the 1970s: Donna Summer

Band of the 1970s: Queen

Male of the 1980s: Prince

Female of the 1980s: Sade (Last great female artist)

Band of the 1980s: Metallica

The last great decade the 80s for music.

Now this is where it gets harder because music declined badly throughout the 90s and officially died in the 00s.

Male of the 1990s: Impossible too many bad ones

Female of the 1990s: MAYBE Mariah Carey.

Band of the 1990s: They all sounded the same.

Male artist of the 2000s: Probably Usher? Maybe

Female artist of the 2000s: Was there any?

Band of the 2000s: Couldn't tell you.

Male artist of the 2010s: None

Female artist of the 2010s: None

Band of the 2010: None

This list does make me feel lucky to have seen it all throughout the 60s-80s... Musically I think anyone born between the 50s-70s were lucky smile

1950s

Male - Elvis Presley
Female - Brenda Lee (not many others to choose from)
Band - The Coasters

1960s

Male - Elvis Presley (yes, again)
Female - Diana Ross
Band - Sly and The Family Stone

1970s

Male - Bruce Springsteen
Female - Patsy Gallant
Band - Steely Dan

1980s

Male - Prince
Female - Madonna
Band - Bon Jovi

1990s

Male - George Michael
Female - Shania Twain
Band - Pearl Jam

2000s

Male - Justin Timberlake
Female - Gwen Stefani
Band - The Killers

2010s

Male - Mayer Hawthorne
Female - Gavin Turek
Band - Tuxedo

Breaking it down like that, the 2000s were easily my least favourite decade for music but that is why breaking it down like this is kind of pointless. Because it was in the 2000s that I discovered great music from the likes of Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder etc.
It also shows that in the 2010s there has been a huge upturn in the quality of music in general. Not necessarily in the charts but the freedom independent artists have from the internet has allowed many great artists to really shine. Even if some stubborn old people refuse to acknowledge them, and in turn, me. But each to their own.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't know much about the 50s and 60s, most stuff is hard to listen to these days.

70's has some good songs, but no favourite artist

80's, of course have to go with Prince, although i do like Michael Jackson and George Michael.

Female, probably Janet, but Madonna has a lot of great singles too.

the 90's were special to me, some many different things going on: drum&bass, bigbeat, jungle, mellow house, techno.... I think the 90's was the time i really saw creaitivity in music. So its hard to say what my favourite artists are. I did love Janet a lot in the 90's though. But also bjork, massive attick, goldie, neneh cherry....the list goes on

Is really cool to see some George Michael fans. From my experience people just say "he was average but that's all."

a

1950s:
Chuck Berry
Etta James
There really aren't a lot of bands in this period; mostly backup bands working for a label or artist.

1960s:
Bob Dylan
Janis Joplin
The Rolling Stones

1970s:
Marvin Gaye
Betty Davis
Sly & the Family Stone

1980s:
Prince
Kate Bush
Midnight Oil

1990s:
Lenny Kravitz
Cassandra Wilson

2000s:
Manu Chao
Joss Stone
I can't think of bands from this later period that I really like. Micky mentioned Sharon Jones & The Dapp Kings, yeah, they were pretty good.

If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

He's one of my favourite artists. Amazing vocals, wrote and produced most of his own songs.
