Another factor in chart success is the longevity of the single in the charts. Some of the songs by MJ were such huge smashes out of the box that they charted extremely high garnering immense radio play. These songs, no matter how good, tend to have a fairly quick burnout rate on radio and thus don't chart nearly as long as some songs by relatively unknowns. I remember people really betting sick of Beat It even though the vide was great and it initially was a beloved song. This past year newbies to the chart such as Billie Ellish (Bad Boys) and Lewis Capaldi (Someone You Loved) took several months to make it to the top with a slow but sustained radio build. Each week that they chart they earn more chart points, so the songs are huge in the Billboard metrics no matter how long on top.

I guess high chart peaks aren't the only factor. The total number of weeks a song stays in the Hot 100, even if it's lower in the charts comes into play too. She may have just had more songs to stick around longer. The can't be too far apart from one another.

Drake just recently surpassed Madonna as the act with the most top 10's on the Billboard Hot 100. Although it would seem a lot of his "hits" are songs that didn't hang around the charts for long. The way charts are calculated now are so different to back in the day. Album tracks can make it onto the charts now, making it seem newer acts have lots of "hits" when really, it may just be that they're new album got streamed a lot on first week, making random songs eligible to chart on Hot 100.

Let's just imagine if that were the policy when Thriller, Purple Rain, Like A Virgin etc were released.....those artists would have so many more "hits". In the case of Madonna, Into The Groove probably would've been a number one hit. Funny, it's one of Madonna's most well known songs that gets TONS of recurrent play these days, yet it didn't chart at all because it technically wasn't a single.

This. Makes these type of lists interesting but not entirely fair. Also probably doesn't include artists who had huge success in bands and solo, like MJ with the J5 and Phil Collins with genesis.
