Black Radio (and clubs) in New York, WBLS and KISS FM were the first to break Madonna and make her famous...they played her debut stuff NONSTOP ... thats why alot of people thought she was Black or Puerto Rican at first...it seems Madonna was heard for awhile, before she was really seen...then MTV hit big and she catered her look and sound to their demographic from that point on...brilliant career moves, but i just couldnt get into her new directions musically...but all the 20-30 year career artists change directions as they mature, and lose some fans along the way. That's true....I first heard 'Everybody' at a party in early 1983. Over the next few months WBLS & KISS would play her stuff....didn't see her until around the time her debut LP dropped in the summer.

yep,R&B radio played Madonna first.I remember “Holiday” getting massive airplay on R&B stations in late ‘83.Later,when “Borderline” was released, that’s when pop radio and MTV started playing her.I,too, thought she was black when I first heard her songs.

I second this. I was sitting in a beauty college getting a new haircut while in high school. "Holiday" was on the radio. I'd heard it once or so, and knew it. Some JM J Bullock looking dude was dancing around the salon to "Holiday." He made me laugh, and I was tapping my foot through the whole song. I thought it was a Black girl.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm gonna start a 90's thread for her works, so we have a little overlap for a bit. Maybe we can hit the aughts later in September at some point.

Great do that.

Like a Prayer for the 80's.

Although, my overall favorite Madonna album is Erotica.

Erotica is pretty cool though a departure from her 80s material

Yeah and quite a big departure from her 80's sound

I remember having a crush on her from the Borderline video. I was 12 at the time.

I'm going to go with Like A Virgin/True Blue tied. For me, that mid-80s is the perfect era.

Side note: I always wondered why she was not invited to We Are The World. Or maybe she was and also declined it?

I’ve heard it was cause she wasn’t taken seriously as an artist like cyndi Lauper was, but she did perform at live aid which made up for it

Who didn't consider her a serious artist?

I don’t know how true that is to be honest, but critics weren’t very kind to her that time and one said she sounds like mini mouse on helium.

I hope they said the same about Cyndi which sounds even more, be that as it may, I love them both, well Madonna a little bit more, but Cyndi has great albums and songs as well.
