Quiz: What Do These Songs Have In Common?

I made this playlist on Spotify a while back. Can you tell me what these 12 songs have in common? It's not the year, record label, or producer. And the artists have no particular association.

Justified and Ancient - The KLF & Tammy Wynette

Just Another Day - Jon Secada

Candy Rain - Soul For real

Sadeness - Enigma

Close To You - Maxi Priest

Keep on Movin' - Soul II Soul

I Love Your Smile - Shanice

It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day - S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M.

All Around The World - Lisa Stansfield

Tom's Diner - Suzanne Vega & DNA

You Can't Deny It (US Mix) - Lisa Stansfield

Back To Life - Soul II Soul

They hit #1 on a Billboard chart, mostly around 1989 to 1991.

Looks like all of the songs sample "Ashley's Roachclip" in some way, shape, or form.

Correct! I had just started to notice how everyone was using that same beat. I don't really know who did it first (not important, but I think it may have been Soul II Soul or Enigma), but everyone was riding its jock for a year or two.

My little playlist on Spotify is "That 90's Beat." The KLF is sort of a variation of it, though. And Soul System feels a slight bit different, but it's in there.

I'm sure they'd all make a great long-ass mix.

Yeah I meant the beat as well. I feel like milli vanilli may have been first if not soul ii soul. Seems like it came out of Europe if not America

See my earlier post above. If I'm not mistaken, the drum loop you're talking about occurs a little past the 3 minute mark of the song. You may also recognize some other "golden era hip hop" samples in other parts of the same song...
