I liked Phil Collins.

Also love Phil Collins, there’s no comparison between these two

You will not find a bigger Phil Collins fan than me. I was not comparing them artistically, but pointing out the fact both are huge names that get a lot of flack, especially from the crowds you would think would love them. John Legend got famous as a Kanye protege with a neo-soul-ish album, but it's mostly the pop crowd buying his albums. Then there was Genesis, but Phil hit it big with pop and black audiences, and rock purists shunned him.

I love both. I was just pointing out people seem to love to hate them both. Venture outside these forums and read some articles on the flack Phil took.

Even then I still wouldn't compare Legend to Phil. I don't hear the former getting any sort of flack the same way the former did (and still does). If anything, Legend seems to mostly go unnoticed with more praise than scrutiny mixed in occasionally.

As far as commercial success goes, I don't see Legend's (former) core audience coming at him the way rock critics have come at Phil; most of Phil's criticism was just unwarranted snobby rock community garbage whereas Legend's critics are more justified in their opinions (and these extend beyond one niche group). On top of that, different eras aside, Legend was never anywhere near the seller or star that Phil was despite whoever buys his albums.

When you are handpicked by the "agenda" to represent your "people" you automatically become a puppet of the industry. not to say hes a bad person or all but as soon as he was picked, he was on every TV show, every award show show and gained national attention worldwide in such a matter of time. This is a mark of a puppet. Its no different in politics and sports as well. Yes he;'s talented however he does not have the hits to support his popularity. To put it in a better perspective, think of John Legend as the modern day Lionel Richie. He's the peoples choice if you will. He wont stir up anything bad towards zionsim or the powers that be who control the music industry. It's all a game.

Is it just me or does he get too much props? I think he’s so boring, anyone else feel that way?

True about the sales, but few people achieve that level of success.

It was just the first thing came to mind. This is not the first forum I've seen the discussion on John Legend come up - his Youtube vids and album reviews on iTunes are full of polarizing comments, many of whom find him too commercial and vastly overrated. He of course has tons of fans as well, but a lot of people are perplexed by his success. Its definitely not something unique to this forum.

Phil was the first thing that came to mind as I read the comments here, that's all. Maybe I should have clarified more in my original post. I just see similar arguments made about Phil Collins as I do John Legend - especially when it comes ot over-exposure, as Phil took a pounding for being everywhere, all the time.

I think the only difference is Legend started out pretty much as an R&B/Pop artist and has remained such, and Phil went from being sort of alternative rocker to way more of a pop-rocker, so there was no fanbase that Legend "left behind" in his music, whereas a lot of Peter Gabriel/Genesis fans didn't like Phil after he and Genesis went to more of a pop-oriented sound.

I get what you're saying - clearly I'm alone in thinking this - but Phil Collins was the first thing that popped in my mind as I read through this thread.

That's fair enough. Sorry if came off as rude but I just wasn't getting the comparison though I see where you were coming from now.

He may be risking over-exposure if there is this much of a backlash. He is on TV an awful lot.

All threads expire after 60 days. This one is scheduled to die sometime tomorrow.

Seeing the large amount of snips, I expected the whole thing to remain hidden after being moderated. Instead, everyone gets to criticize John and his wife for a few extra days.
