Though I love janet, I’m not surprised she isn’t on any list. The Janet album sold around 15 million but that may have been how many were shipped

I don't know anyone in my personal circle who listens to Michael Jackson but me, and of course I'm not and idiot to doubt his sales just because nobody I know listen to his muisc. What a naive and foolish argument.

Uhm. Yeah. It does matter. Especially considering nobody really buys albums anymore.

Hence why Bob Dylan was able to top the charts this past week.

Yes, they are the most successful girl GROUP of all time (over The Supremes, Destiny's Child) with CrazySexyCool *selling* (not just shipping) 11 million in the USA alone (10 million is certified diamond).

Wow. I think I know one song of theirs - No Scrubs. Surprised they've sold more than Destiny's Child.

Yeah, where is Janet?

Wikipedia is a great source of information but not everything there is accurate, especially on the music side of things.

For one, records is albums and singles combined. So if the stipulation is records sold then some of these names are more believable (due to their single sales). If we're talking albums sold then I can't fathom why Rihanna, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj are on here. Beyonce is another quandary since whenever I've seen her sales numbers, it's always tied to "records", not specifically albums or singles.

No doubt she's sold a good amount of albums but as big a star as she's made out to be, she's never been the highest selling artist, male or female in any part of her career, even back when millions of people were still purchasing physical albums.

"Waterfalls" by TLC is the one that sounds so much like Prince (who dated Chilli) that there was a rumor he ghostwrote it for the production crew Organized Noize who really never made anything quite like it before or since.

TLC also covered The Time's "Get It Up" for the Poetic Justice soundtrack, and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" on their second album CrazySexyCool.

Prince appeared on the 1999 MTV VMAs in his Rave latex outfit just to introduce "[his] favourite group" before TLC performed "No Scrubs".

If that's the case, then so are some of the others. I don't always go by these lists because much, imo, are often manipulated and not accurate. Sorry! Peeps wanna try and discredit Janet, but ol girl has certainly pushed a lot of units. More than what's not being told. You can't convince me otherwise. Janet would have 5 - 7 Top 10 singles to come off one album alone, and she's done it consistently throughout her career. Take the albums, starting from Control to janet?? Ain't no damn way lol

On her website, it says the album janet. sold over 20 million worldwide. Sos eh should be on that list. I know she's the 11th highest selling female artist in the US, but that's based on certifications. If she were to recertify, she'd probably push a few girls down the list.

I know she also hasn't recertified most of her stuff since 2010 and is the most uncertified artist in the world with over 100 million undercertified records combined. But yeah just for albums ONLY she's not that high. ALbums and singles combined then yeah, she's up there. She's sold voer 170 mil total records

I read somewhere and saw that CrazySexyCool just got bumped up to 12 million. I checked the RIAA website (yep, I just started doing that again, lol), searched for CrazySexyCool, and sure enough.. it was certified 12x platinum. I LOVE TLC... Greatest Girl Group Ever! woot! dancing jig music

TBH I prefer TLC over Destiny's Child. Does Beyonce really write/produce her own stuff or did she just smartly make sure she got songwriting and producing credits because it means more $$$.

It's not really a surprising list. If I was asked to guess who the top 10 best selling female artists were, I'd probably have named at least 8 of those. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera would probably replace Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry but other than that, it's exactly as I would have thought. Though it is proof, if ever you needed it, that "best selling" and "most talented" are two very, very different things.

Here's the top 10 best selling albums by female artists of all time.

  1. Whitney Houston – The Bodyguard
  2. Shania Twain – Come On Over
  3. Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill
  4. Celine Dion – Falling Into You
  5. Adele – 21
  6. Madonna – The Immaculate Collection
  7. Celine Dion – Let’s Talk About Love
  8. Mariah Carey – Music Box
  9. Norah Jones – Come Away With Me
  10. Carole King - Tapestry

And female artists who have albums that have claimed sales of 20 million copies or more.

  1. Celine Dion – 4

  2. Madonna – 3

  3. Whitney Houston – 3

  4. Adele – 1

  5. Britney Spears – 1

  8. Alanis Morissette – 1

  9. Carole King – 1

  10. Norah Jones – 1

  11. Spice Girls – 1

Celine Dion having 4 albums with sales of 20 million or more is quite remarkable. A little sad though that so few women are on the list.

The Bodyguard is a Movie Soundtrack and not a studio album.

Nix The Immaculate Collection to since that's a greatest hits compilation and not a studio album.

The Bodyguard is far closer to an actual studio album than TIC.

I might've said that wrong lol. Billboard named her the top female artist of the 2000s decade and 4th overal behind Eminem, Usher, and Nelly (in that order). And Billboard is just the US. I know Britney outsold her albums wise that decade in the US and worldwide, but Beyonce does sell a lot in singles. I think Halo is eligible for Diamond and Single Ladies at 9x plat. (Total units, not pure sales). She also had more #1 singles than any of the other girls in the 2000s. Billboard might have done this based on chart performance with all the different genres and singles and albums charts so Bey might have just performed better on the charts she was on. To be fair, I've never seen anybody classify PR as a soundtrack ever. It's always considered a part of Prince's solo discography; even looking at his Wikipedia and AllMusic pages, PR is listed right after 1999.

This is different from Whitney where you go from I'm Your Baby Tonight to My Love Is Your Love under her Studio Albums tab and The Bodyguard (as well as The Preacher's Wife) is listed under her soundtracks.

Interesting. Didn't think she sold that much to be ranked that high.

I agree it would definitely have to be singles that boosted her standing though. Disregarding whatever re-certifications haven't taken place, none of her 2000s albums have gone diamond in the US whereas Eminem, Usher and Nelly each have one to their name (Em has 2). Beyonce's highest selling album was her debut and in comparison that only went 4Γ— Platinum with each successive release selling less.

The next woman on the list you provided is Alicia Keys right on Bey's tail at #5. Following her is Britney at #8 and then Destiny's Child, themselves at #9. I'd like to see the women who ranked in outside the Top 10 but Billboard's website is garbage and seemingly every other page is unavailable.
