Love Zeppelin, Stones and The Who, but none of the bands you mention come even close to the genius and art Frank Zappa (and his bands) and George Clinton (Parliament and Funkadelic) created...
Seriously, Queen... The only thing they had going for them was Freddy Mercury... And The Beatles' corny shit was only great for those corny days when there was nothing else of note to listen to in Britain...
The USA had Blues and Rock 'n Roll titans before those lame white guys hijacked it...

George Clinton called The Beatles his favourite rock band, so I guess they were not that corny...

Since when is George Clinton the end-all-be-all authority on wether some band is the best?

these threads always devolve into weighing personal favorites against achievements, accolades and legacies...everybody is right and everybody is wrong...The Beatles may have a few "corny" songs in their catalog, but to write their entire existence off as corny, makes no sense...there were certainly more talented individuals in other bands by far...but The Beatles (& Mr. George Martin) CONSISTENTLY made great songs...songs that would sound great for decades...great music is not about how talented the individual musicians and singers are...its in the SONG...its always the song...plenty great singers and musicians in and out of the industry... but it takes a great SONGS to give those talents a lasting legacy...thats why everyone knows who Ringo Starr is, but other than a few of us, who really knows who played drums on "Maggot Brain"?...

Still doesn't make him an authority on what is corny or not...

Well I gotta say this about that.

Any list that does not have Funkadelic in the top five is suspect to me.

I think the issue with the Beatles is that they are two different bands. Up to Help they were a somewhat corny pop band. When Revolver came around and they stopped touring, they became something different altogether. They changed the industry and every music listener with it. They also started writing very different music. I don't particularly like the "old" Beatles, but I think the post-Revolver Beatles are one of the greatest bands ever.

I love the Beatles but have to agree on the corniness up until Revolver (but honestly when those first albums came out these were solid even tho there were more amazing records out in the US.)
Revolver came after they met Frank Zappa (I'm really not familiar with his music) and they siad that he changed the way they thought about music and Revolver and all the albums since that was mainly influenced by Zappa's way of composing and creating music and all the new (black) music that was going around in the US at he time. John Lennon was close with Zappa and that's what he explained in those days. Could be he was just humble. Again I never really heard anything from Zappa but what I did hear was more jazzy weirdness that I don't associate with the Beatles.

Here is a song by Zappa that reminds me of Funkadelic. It took me years to appreciate Zappa but some of his stuff is amazing.

That stuff you call "corny shit" is still going strong all around the world almost 60 years later. I would bet there aren't many people around the world or in the US for that matter that can name one Zappa or George Clinton song. Not saying they didn't have some good music, but to call the Beatles "corny shit" is just plain ignorant.

I liked all the periods of the Beatles music. Sure their early stuff was bubble gum but hey so was most of the music in the early 60's. Later on in the decade psychedelic rock was popular and the Beatles changed as well. Still their early stuff is better than most of the "music" of the past 20 years.

.

I'd say Sheik Yer'bouti and Joe's Garage are probably his most listener friendly albums. (and completely subversive at that) I also have a soft spot for some of Zappa's early work, like with the Mothers of Invention, who could spoof most of the music industry with just an album cover.

Off the top of my head:

Allman Brothers Band

The Doors

Delaney & Bonnie

Talking Heads

Van Halen

Someone asked if The Band should be considered...most of them are Canadian...But Levon Helm is the heart and soul of The Band, and they are known for their Americana style, so I say they def belong on the list.

I love Aerosmith's 70s stuff but the 80s/90s output, besides Pump, made me take them off the list.

yup.. it's from the disco era and he explores dance with songs like Dancing Fool. Also, the song Bobby Brown is on this album. Banned immediately in English language countries, it did receive airplay in countries that have other languages and even became a hit in some, iirc. Word of warning though, if you listen to the song, you are likely to have the lyrics popping up in your head often, for years to come.

Those are the songs I only knew him of when I was growing up, they were minor hits in Holland and Bobby Brown is still played on the radio here evry now and then.

Same here. They evolved with the times, and dare say forged a change in contemporary rock music as they matured as musicians and songwriters. They were on point with the "corny stuff" - that is what was being played and written at the time and it was still leagues above the rest.

I say a discernible shift in their writing can be seen in Rubber Soul - an album that inspired Brian Wilson to write and produce Pet Sounds. The Beach Boys, at the helm of Brian Wilson were a talented and unique American band

Rubber Soul was the definite turning point when they went from mop-tops to artists. Although you can hear seeds in Help and even Beatles for Sale (Baby's in Black, Follow the Sun). But from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road, every album was more interesting and more innovative. They were truly challenging themselves from that point on.

Given that, I still love the early albums for pure rock n roll fun. Especially Hard Days Night.
