Usher has sold 274 million unis in Australia?! He received this plaque during the RnB Fridays tour, in which he headlined in late 2018.

He has sold over 75 million ALBUMS worldwide, so 274 million units isn't completely unrealistic, BUT in Australia alone? It just sounds...weird. Like, the one country/continent alone? Maybe it came from mostly single sales (and some streaming, even though streaming didn't really come into play until 2016). No one knows how many singles he's sold WW so this could be true. I'm just a little bit skeptical, even though I'm a huge Usher fan lol. Y'all's thoughts? [Edited 5/5/20 16:54pm]

It really could be possible though. The Assuies LOVE Usher. He's like MJ in their eyes. They be screaming, fainting, and crying at his concerts lol. Plus, it did say 274 million unts, which means some streaming was involved (even though he's only had streming for about 2 years in his career). Just cuz he's "past his prime" especially her in the US, doesn;t mean he no longer has worldwide appeal. His internaitonal fanbse is huge.

I really have no idea what a "unit" means based on this thread.

In Usher's case, most of that 274 is going to be actual sales, but usually it's a mixture of streams and sales. That's why sometimes we hear "This artist sold 100,000k in the first week, 25k being pure sales". Most of today's artists (Drake, Lizzo, Ariana, J Cole, etc) have really high units of sales because they have such high streaming numbers. In Usher's case, it is mostly pure sales (digital downloads of singles and albums and physical copies of albums).

So basically, a unit is any purchase/use (stream) no matter what the quantity/format? Like a ringtone could be a unit? Or the streaming not purchase of a ringtone? [Edited 5/5/20 18:58pm]

Not really. A certain number of streams equals one unit. I think here, 1,250 streams of an album equals one unit. For songs, I know the unit is close but a little bit smaller, like 1,100 or something like that. I think ringtones count as well, but differently. And YouTube views don't count, from my knowledge, though that may have changed in the last few months.
Since he's an artist who peaked and sold most of his records before the streaming era began in 2016, for Usher that 274 million would probably be 250 million+ in actual sales and the other 20+ coming from streams. He aslo hasn't recertified or "recounted" his sales in a good 10 or 12 years. Most of his albums and songs are recertified, so he potentially has tens or maybe even 100 million records that haven't been counted yet. Hopefully he will soon. I just want to know his total sales in the US and worldwide. [Edited 5/5/20 20:00pm]

In Australia we have a population of around 25 million so 274 million sales neavs every human owns 12 usher cds, lp’s, etc. only thing I can suggest is that it must be a sum total of sales, streams, views etc.

So Usher, an American R&B singer, has sold more in Austrailia than in this own country America? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

That's what I'm skeptical about. It's possible that the same 10 million keep buying several singles and albums, but that's such a huge number. NO doubt he's a huge artist with an amazing international fanbase, I just, don't know. I know that it does include streama sn pure sales. But even then, most of those units would be pure sales based on his career trajectory and when this picture was taken (2018). Oh well. Good for him

International fanbase really? I think is just english spoken markets, otherwise I don't think he's got much market.

Hmm, well... I live in Australia, and I bought Confessions on Cd back in the day. That one cd was pretty popular, and a few others sold okay. I'd guess real album sales (wild guess) in Australia at about 1 million or less. Including ALL singles and ALL albums, maybe 3 million, but even that would be a stretch. He was never as successful as Michael Jackson as someone here stated. 🍢
