Angie Stone is of course singing the song from the perspective of a black woman, sharing unconditional love and support with her black man... at the time this song came out Prince was well known for having a history of dating non-black women... over the years, one of the criticisms of Prince from the black community, was his seeming reluctance to use black women in his art and also his propensity for dating/marrying non-black women...and many black women felt a certain kinda way about Prince's preference for white or racially ambiguous looking women...so i can easily understand Prince not being a part of her salute to black men...also,despite his greatness and talents, Prince has rarely if ever, been used as an example of Black Male Masculinity and strength, which is the tone of Angie Stone's lyrical tribute to black men. | |
