On the other day, I caught Kurtis Blow's "If I Ruled The World" on the Yo Hip Hop mix on MTV. Never saw the video before and couldn't help but notice young(er) Andre Harrell suited up and dancing throughout the video.

Andre Harrell, the music executive who launched Uptown Records and helped usher in a new era of hip-hop flavored soul and R&B, was laid to rest on Saturday (May 23) at George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. The funeral followed a celebration of his life at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home in Fair Lawn, NJ. Harrell died on May 7 from heart disease-related issues.

Among the attendees were artists Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige, comedian Chris Rock and executives L.A. Reid and Lyor Cohen, according to local reports.

I saw Dr. Jeckell & Mr. Hyde perform at the "Krush Groove Christmas Party" on a Friday night in late December of 1985 at a sold-out Madison Square Garden. Jesus, I cannot believe that was 35 years ago! A bunch of wild shit jumped off after the show lots of people got stuck up and I think someone got stabbed to death. Anyway, let's see it was LL Cool J (he opened, just him and Cut Creator on a stipped bare stage in front of 20,000 people), Doug E. Fresh, Dr. Jeckell & Mr. Hyde, Kurtis Blow, & Whodini. Maybe I left someone out?? Run-DMC was on the bill but someone was sick or something so they didn't go on, which was disappointing, although as we were leaving the arena parking area we did go right by Run-DMC's limo and caught a glimpse of all of them. Whodini was the class of the Garden that evening, without a doubt. RIP Andre Harrell. Not difficult to imagine clawing your way to the top of the black music world in the 80s and early 90s New York City and then trying to hang on as everything around you changes and then changes again is more than just a little stressful.

Thank you for sharing this memory. I didn't know they were part of that show. The lineup pretty much sounds like Russell Simmons' Rush Management roster for Fresh Fest.

Sidenote: I love seeing those clips of young L.L. performing to support his first album. So hungry and talented!
