Little Richard, Founding Father of Rock Who Broke Musical Barriers, Dead at 87

rs-239428-little-richard.jpg?resize=1800,1200&w=450

Little Richard, a founding father of rock and roll whose fervent shrieks, flamboyant garb, and joyful, gender-bending persona embodied the spirit and sound of that new art form, died Saturday. He was 87. The musician’s son, Danny Jones Penniman, confirmed the pioneer’s death to Rolling Stone, but said the cause of death was unknown.

Little Richard’s stage persona – his pompadours, androgynous makeup and glass-bead shirts – also set the standard for rock and roll showmanship; Prince, to cite one obvious example, owed a sizable debt to the musician. “Prince is the Little Richard of his generation,” Richard told Joan Rivers in 1989 before looking at the camera and addressing Prince. “I was wearing purple before you was wearing it!”

A great talent.

It's amazing that among the early rockers, the last man standing is...Jerry Lee Lewis !

I thought he'd live to be 100. A true musical pioneer. All hail the Architect of Rock and Roll!

Oh no sad 87 is a long life, but still unfair that he died during the pandemic.

One of the godfathers of R&B and R&R. And possibly the biggest influence of Prince.

For me, the one true King of Rock n' Roll!! cool

He lived an amazing life and a helluva life.

Whenever I listen to Lucille, Good Golly Miss Molly or Tutti Fruti, I always come away feeling great! smile cool

No Little Richard, no James Brown (who actually started out pretending to be Little Richard to get gigs!). Obviously, no Richard, no Sly Stone, no Hendrix, and definitely no Prince. P's whole look at times was just an update of the original 'beautiful' Richard style. Richard was/ is truly the 'Quasar of Rock n' Roll'!

Hope he's resting easy and satisfied in God's house. RIP

I just heard the news about Little Richard and I’m so grieved. He was my shining star and guiding light back when I was only a little boy. His was the original spirit that moved me to do everything I would do.

I played some shows with him in Europe in the early nineties and got to hang out in his dressing room a lot. He was always generous, kind and humble. And still dynamite as a performer and a musician and you could still learn plenty from him.

In his presence he was always the same Little Richard that I first heard and was awed by growing up and I always was the same little boy. Of course he’ll live forever. But it’s like a part of your life is gone.

Elton John on Little Richard: ‘A True Legend, Icon and a Force of Nature’

“Without a doubt – musically, vocally and visually – he was my biggest influence,” singer says of late rock pioneer

Elton John remembered Little Richard on social media Saturday following the music icon’s death at the age of 87.

Elton John remembered Little Richard on social media Saturday following the music icon’s death at the age of 87.

.

“Without a doubt – musically, vocally and visually – he was my biggest influence,” John wrote in a series of tweets. “Seeing him live in my teens was the most exciting event in my life at that point. Goosebumps, electricity and joy came from every pore.”

.

In 1966, John — then Reginald Dwight, the organist in the band Bluesology — opened for Little Richard during the rock pioneer’s London concert. “When I saw Little Richard standing on top of the piano, all lights, sequins and energy, I decided there and then then that I was going to be a rock ‘n’ roll piano player,” John said in the biography His Song: The Musical Journey of Elton John.

John continued Saturday, “His records still sound fresh and the opening few seconds of ‘Tutti Frutti’ are the most explosive in music history. I was lucky enough to work with him for my ‘Duets’ album in 1993. He was shy and funny and I was SO nervous. The track we recorded “The Power” is a favorite in my catalogue. We also played live at the Beverly Hilton and I felt like I’d died and gone to heaven. He influenced so many and is irreplaceable. A true legend, icon and a force of nature.”

.

In a 1973 Rolling Stone interview, John said of Little Richard’s influence on his music, “I’m more a Little Richard stylist than a Jerry Lee Lewis, I think. Jerry Lee is a very intricate piano player and very skillful, whereas I think Little Richard is more of a pounder. I think his rock and roll records are the best rock and roll records ever made, as far as just the genuine sound on them goes.”

Without a doubt - musically, vocally and visually - he was my biggest influence. Seeing him live in my teens was the most exciting event in my life at that point. Goosebumps, electricity and joy came from every pore.
