All great choices from an all-time great artist!! It always gets me thinking, like what happened, Stevie?? Why so good in the 70s, then a definite creative decline post Hotter Than July and here are, 15 years since his last album!! 😮

Like, what happened, Stevie?? eek neutral

nothing lasts forever...especially greatness...Stevie Wonder contributed far more great music over a longer period of time than almost anyone...and not just for himself either...there will come a day when you too wont be able to do certain things as well as you used to do them, or even be able to do them at all..and thats quite alright...its part of the circle of life

"Age"

Maybe, but age hasn't stopped George Clinton, Paul Mccartney, Bob Dylan etc creating. And Stevie's voice is arguably in better condition than those guys.

My guess is more like a lack of fire to create, being set in his ways, procrastination and over-perfectionism. He's teased around three different albums that he's 'working on' over the last decade or so and his only releases are collabs with other artists and guest spots confused.

I know Stevie had a kidney transplant last year, so hope he's doing well. Maybe some ... er, music therapy might be in order? lol

Stevie has given us so much, for so many years.I'd love some new music from him,but I'm OK if he doesn't want to put out a new album. We have enough Stevie Wonder music to last a lifetime.

Well he's not that old, and sure wasn't back in 2005 when he released his last album, he was only 55.

LOL...huh?...who do you know at 70 or 55 for that matter that can still do the things they did in their youth?... do you know how much spiritual, physical, and emotional energy, and time it takes to create original music?...name a 70 year old musician still creating music at the same pace and same quality as when they were younger

youre forgetting one very important factor when comparing Stevie Wonder to the others you mentioned who are running on fumes and releasing subpar efforts...Stevie Wonder IS BLIND!...the rest of them cats can see things...good lord, the disrespect shown to artists of color is amazing...talkin bout his "procrastination" and downplaying his kidney transplant like hes some kind of machine or beast of burden, placed on Earth solely for your entertainment purposes...wheres your Talking Book?...wheres your Songs In The Key Of Life?.

Bob Dylan and I would say Paul McCartney.

Yeah you're right I was just saying back in 2005 he wasn't that old, but he's free to decide his own terms for release music of course.

"only"

Rock and Roll is for the young and is charged with energy that I can assure you wanes at 55.

I'm 53, haven't accompished 2% of what Stevie has and stuggle to be creative even without his bank account.

This stuff is charged with sexuality, energy and passion that quite simply just fades with age, especially if you're rich, comfortable and don't have to really answer to anyone.

Asking questions like "why didn't Prince do more/better" and "what happened to Stevie?" is a fool's game IMO.

eek No disrespect from here, quite the opposite. Certainly not disprespect due to colour, no need to bring that into the discussion. It would just be exciting, from a light-hearted, purely selfish fan's viewpoint, if Stevie had been/ was able to release say one very good/great new album. Because he has produced greatness in the past, maybe, just maybe he could again. That's why one might 'expect' more from him than from some other mediocre artist.

If that's not to be or ain't his scene, then peace ... He sure done plenty already cool

A person that sells more is always going to get talked about more in the media. Stevie got radio airplay on R&B and pop stations long before and after Al. Stevie's first record came out in 1962 and it was a hit. Al didn't really get popular until his 3rd album in 1971. Al was on Hi Records and Hi was kinda like 1960s Motown. A lot of Hi songs had a similar sound because Willie Mitchell produced most of the records and the same house band & background singers were used. Just had different singers on the records like Ann Peebles or O.V. Wright. Stevie's 1970s music did not really sound like the other artists on Motown. Stevie & Marvin Gaye fought the Motown assembly line system.

Al left secular music at the height of his popularity in the mid-1970s to become a preacher and then started exclusively releasing gospel records. Which is the same thing Little Richard did in the 1950s. Gospel doesn't get mainstream attention and religious songs have rarely become radio hit singles. So Al did not get the mainstream attention like Stevie continued to do. Al didn't really start making secular songs again until around the 1990s, and by then his radio play days were mostly over. He did get a few radio hits with duets with Annie Lennox & Ann Nesby and the song Al B Sure! produced. He did start singing some of his old secular hits in concert during the 1980s. Stevie did not have any scandal either. It was said that the story behind the Mary Woodson "grits" incident hurt Al's radio airplay on R&B stations and his popularity with many of his female fans at the time.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Al Green is great.....a soul music icon.....but Stevie was on another whole level.Al has some good albums, but he doesn't have something like Innervisions or Songs In The Key Of Life in his catalog.
