Hamilton Bohannon RIP

R.I.P. legendary artist and producer Hamilton Bohannon

hamiltonbohannon.jpg

(April 25, 2020) He was a music lifer who contributed to several momentous periods in music and also created an iconic dance jam. We are very sad today to report the passing of the great Hamilton Bohannon at age 78

Bohannon moved from his native Georgia to Detroit as a young man to perform as a drummer in a teenage Stevie Wonder’s touring band. It led to a job at Motown leading the touring musicians for many of the label’s biggest artists in the late 60s and early 70s, including The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes. He also wrote for Gaye and other artists during his stay at Motown.

My first introduction to him was Foot Stompin Music. He's best remembered for the disco funk smash Let's Start The Dance. He had some other nice jams out too like Let The Children Play,

Feel Like Dancing, The Hammer.

wow...smh..."Lets Start The Dance"...one of the pre-eminent songs in the soundtrack of my life... i can vividly remember being at my cousins' basement birthday party and at that point i had never asked a girl to dance at a party because i was super shy. Bohannon's joint comes on and my cousin told me her best friend Sherri (Troy Beyer lookalike) wanted to dance with me. i tried to say nah, but its my favorite song at the time and my cousin basically grabbed both our hands and pushed us out on the floor together.. I can still see my cousin out the corner of my eye laughing and mocking my then uncoordinated dancing...poor Sherri...i only tried because i loved that song so much, but i clearly wasnt ready...it became a running joke for years, for the people who had seen me that night...the song is so damn funky, i think i was dancing too hard and doing too much...not cool in a basement house party...it took me years to get over the embarrassment (if i ever did), and Sherri from then on wasnt feelin me at all.. oh well...i blame Hamilton Bohannon..😎..RIP brother

Cool story RJ Orion. I had a similar situation at a middle school dance. It was a girl I liked so

much named Wanda and a mutual friend had to ask her for me to dance. We were dancing to And the Beat Goes On by the Whispers and my moves were so uncoordinated it wasn't funny but it got

better in high school. lol

Bohannon's Let's Start The Dance brings back memories of me, my sister, and my cousins

dancing to the record over at my uncle's house in middle school.

All these years I didn't realize he had a connection to Motown particularly

Little Stevie Wonder playing drums for him.

There's also a Song on Marvin Gaye's "You're The Man" Album that Hamilton Bohannon plays Drums on (Marvin Gaye shouts Him out DIRECTLY!!)..... cool

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
