Jackson 5 by a mile but I actually love every version you mentioned and many others I've heard. It's a wonderful song with lyrics anyone can relate too. Timeless.

The Communards' version I had the most fun with at the time.

But the definitive version is surely Gloria Gaynor.

For sure. Anyone claiming it's Gaynor or anyone else don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

J5's is the best, but I love Isaac Hayes' version. Nobody covered a song quite like Isaac.

Yeah I knew there was another version!

To be honest, I really like Gloria's and that would be the debate in my head, if any.

Isaac was a master at re-making and transforming songs.I also like what he did with "Walk On By" (the Dionne Warwick classic) and "Never Gonna Give You Up" (originally recorded by Jerry Butler).

Right? Isaac could’ve been what Aretha & Luther were to covering songs, he reconstructed some of those songs (“Walk On By” like you mentioned). Covering songs didn’t became the forte later, but I still think he’s an underrated arranger.
