cmon Fam...im a fan of O'Bryan's so theres no hate, or agenda...O'B sang the shit outta that song...but the virtuoso Motown house band accompanied by the magically powerful voice of the great Levi Stubbs, is too high a mountain to climb...the backing band on OBryans version sounded like high schoolers compared to The Funk Brothers from Motown...as soon as the guitar/bass/hihat/percussion intro starts to kick in, you can hear the classic destroy the remake...and the heavenly godsent voices of The Andantes, and the other 3 Tops singing behind Levi?..sheeeit... no disrepect to OBryan because he nailed it...but that intangible, irreplaceable, inimitable Motown soul that causes tingles up the spine, is not there... only Levi and The Funk Brothers can do that...Levi Stubbs has the voice of GOD on that joint...he's one of the greatest voices in music history, but gets overshadowed by bigger names that are/were solo artists...one of many great singers that get historically overlooked because they were in a band or group. by the way...THANK YOU for starting this thread...this song is a MAJOR part of my childhood...my parents LOVED this song and it played over and over in our household over the years... my mom has since fallen asleep in death, so now almost everytime i hear this song, i can hear/see her and my father happily in love together, and my face gets all wet with tears...the song already has a beautifully haunting sound as it is, but the memories of my life that are attached to it make hearing the song, a recurring spiritual experience... my wife even cries when she sees me crying listening to this song...id be a damned liar if i said i wasnt crying right now... but i cant really desribe in words how great this song is, and how much it means to me...wow | |
