Not so sure about that..Clive Davis. Clive tried for years to have his "Diana", a huge pop star. First with Shirley Brown (Woman to Woman), then Phyllis Hyman, and then Dionne. It was then, he realize he needed a new artist and not an established R & B artist. Also Donna was an artist that was used to creating with her producers, not just showing up to sing. Donna's friend Bruce Roberts thought Geffen would be a good choice, he already had the Elertca label. You are correct about his new label not really having the experience needed for established superstars. They really didn't promote or pay attention to the established artists they signed, with the expection of Cher (who was Geffen's beard).

yeah, you're right. And plus,in 1980,Clive signed Aretha to his label.Resurrecting HER career was one of his big goals. Can't have too many big divas on the same label smile

Took Clive aobut 5-6 years to resurrect Aretha (get her a big selling album). Her appearence in the Blues Brother's movie help create new interest with another generation.

Yeah it took a few years. He definitely had the magic touch, though. He wisely paired her with Luther Vandross and she had one of her biggest hits with “Jump To It”.Then came the Narada Michael Walden-produced ‘Who’s Zoomin Who’,which was huge.I think it would have been great if Donna had worked with Narada. He’s R&B,but also capable of producing great pop records.

SoulAlive

a funny observation biggrin

Back in the day,I used to wonder if,maybe, Donna was obsessed with prostitution eek lol

Consider that her first album in 1974 was titled Lady Of The Night. The title track,of course,is about a prostitute.

In 1977,she did a song called "Black Lady".It may or not be about a prostitute, but the lyrics seem to indicate that she is singing about some type a bad girl, lol

Then of course, there is the 1979 Bad Girls album and title track.

So because of all these examples,in the 80s when I would hear a new Donna Summer song,I wondered if she was talking about a hooker again.

When I first heard "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)" in 1982,I thought she was singing this lyric in the opening verse: "I guess I missed the target, caught up in a different 9 to 5" lol (the correct lyric is "caught up in a different line of fire")

Then a year later when she came out with the song "She Works Hard For The Money",I thought "here she goes again" lol lol lol

yeah I know,I have a crazy mind biggrin nuts
