The Weeknd - similarities to Prince - discuss

Hi,

I think one of the most exciting musicians who is commercially successful right now is The Weeknd. And I find there is some similarities to Prince:

a) not a quick one-hit wonder, but building up a rising following over the course of many albums

b) risky, definetly not PG-13 lyrics on the first albums, toned down somehow to allow for more radio-friendly tunes

c) to my knowledge, not just a singer, but heavily involved in the crafting of his songs, little outside producers or other musicians

d) a great ear for some memorable hooks and melodies

I do not know about his live shows, but would definetly try to see him if he comes to my local place ;=)

What do you guys think?

He sounds more like a Michael Jackson knock off to me. I don't really get any Prince vibes from him. No more so than you'd get from the likes of Justin Timberlake or any of those guys anyway.

For the record, when I say Michael Jackson knock off, I don't necessarily mean that as a bad thing. Just that he seems to copy Michael Jackson's style more so than he does Prince.

His music does nothing for me, and i've tried. I Feel It Coming was a real attempt to synthesize all of Off the Wall into a single track wasn't it? It left me cold though, if I want to listen to Off the Wall i'll put on Off The Wall, maybe if the melody was stronger...

He sings in falsetto. The end.

I tried some of his early work and it never connected with me. The comparisons to Prince were inevitable I guess. Prince's music is far more vibrant and provocative than what I've heard from The Weeknd.

"Provocative" in the sense that it stokes stronger reactions from the listener. Not in terms of the lyrics.

I hear more mj than prince too, but he was kind of experimental on his earlier albums the way prince was in his time.

His shows are awesome, definitely worth the money

Nope, no similarity.

If that's what you're looking for, I would suggest a Mr. Lenny Kravitz

Hell, even this guy is more similar to Prince than The Weeknd is ...

Imagine, I got some of his records and 12 inches, bought this back in the day when was it, 87 or so?)

In general, I did not mean TheWeeknd sounds like Prince - I meant more how he developed, is independent and all that.

And - I do like some of his songs. Blinded by the Light (my kids play that at full volumen right now) is really cool I think cool

I hafta admit, at times I did do a double-take when I first watched the Tina Cherry video. He even rides a bicycle like Prince did. lol

""I just love Bowie; I think he's the ultimate inventor," the Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, told the Journal.
He added that he and Prince were scheduled to work together in the late musician's Paisley Park studio,
but those plans changed when the "Purple Rain" icon died in April. Prince made his last TV appearance
in November 2015, presenting Tesfaye with an American Music Award.

Not a lot of similarities IMHO. Don't like his music much either. Sounds more like MJ than Prince to my ears. His "Blinding Lights" sounds like a lost A-Ha track from the 80's.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I always thought it has a Pet Shop Boys vibe to it, but A-Ha is also spot-on.

I thought the beat to Blinding Lights sounded like Maniac from Flashdance

I can name at least three outside producers he's used without even being much of a "fan" or ever reading a Wikipedia or discogs credit page, so based on that alone I'll go "No."

[edit] Okay, loaded a page, he averages 3-4 co-producers/co-writers per track, so definitive "No." The-Dream is closer to a Prince, but people don't ever really remember or maybe even know him, which you know, encapsulates the parallels if you ask me.
