Jimmy Smith

Once I fell for Funk I found Jimmy Smith and Jazz and then I COULDN'T GET ENOUGH OF ALL OF IT.

I mean to say that I think I'll still be figuring out Jazz until the day I die but the funk/groove stuff is a great way to start your day.

Jimmy's live performance of the live album "Root Down" still melts my brain;

The Beastie Boys used a sample from this tune and made it more famous but it's also off this live album.

"Back at the Chicken Shack" (https://www.youtube.com/w...uMd8ldLqxo) is another one of my favorite albums from Jimmy Smith but I love live recordings more than studio work from every artist.

What say the Org?

I really like Jimmy Smith's sound. It is so smooth, dense and funky. "The Sermon" is an amazing track. It was used for the soundtrack of Barfly (Mickey Rourke - based on Charles Bukowski's writing). I have a compilation but need to explore further. Jimmy Smith performed the organ solo on "Bad" the Michael Jackson song. His bands including the drummer and sax players are on point and are like a road trip through soul and r and b. Amazing artist and roots down is a better track without the beastie boys contribution (yeah I said it).

Thanks for the reply, going to go check out "The Sermon".

I didn't know he played on MJ's "Bad", going to have to go revisit that too.

Agree 100% about the Beastie Boys, the only positive is that it turned people on to who Jimmy Smith was.

This is what makes the Org so damn cool...musical knowledge and perspective from people as cool as robertgeorge!

You should look out 'the cat', incredible album. I recently picked up an original mint Mono copy, sounds amazing.

Yep. I get distracted, knee-deep over in P&R. Broke loose, came over here, and dancin' fool unleashed. Thanks for tunes.
