I haven't read any reviews where folks are saying it was the best ever.

Shakira was awful, lip-synched her way through the whole thing. J-Lo was better but I think there was still a bit of li[-synching in there, and the remixes of some of her tracks didn't work for me.

Prince's performance is still the best, but some considerable distance.

The dancing was absolutely amazing. Why do people say shakira lipsynced? When you was carried by the public you could hear her voice went off. That wouldnt have happened with lipsync

The bit where she was carried by the crowd might have been, but the rest of it was clearly being mimed.

The song selections were good and they had great energy, but far from the best performance of the superbowl. Mj and Janet had the best superbowls

Come on people some lip syncing????

How about THE ENTIRE PERFORMACE WAS LIP SYNCED

One of the worst halftime shows EVER.

Also quoting from NewsWEAK? Talk about fake news

Not really understanding why anyone would expect Lopez and Shakeria to perform a Superbowl show without pre-recorded vocals? Aren't they more dancers than singers??? confuse

In your previous post you said "she lip-synched her way through the whole thing", now you say she maybe didn't, what is it now?

I get absolutely NOTHING out of the half time show. Maybe grab a few drinks and some more food and get ready for the 3rd quarter.

Yeah, the lipsync argument is a pedestrian go-to. You could even hear J-Lo suckin' air a couple of times after a bigger dance move or something. Shakira doesn't need to lip sync. She can belt loud enough to wake the dead.

To the show itself:

It was beautiful. Not the greatest, but a lot of political and cultural statements in it. There were at least 3 or 4 different dances that Shakira delved into, plus the tongue movement was a nod to her Arabic background (her paternal grandparents are Lebanese and migrated to Columbia by way of New York, which a lot of Lebanese did after both world wars). The kids in cages at the beginning of "Let's Get Loud" served as a precursor to the song becoming a rallying cry for Latino Americans. The pole (a clear fuck you to the Oscars dismissing Hustlers), the P.R. flag... two women put on a show that covered more than a dozen songs, different styles of dance, and more. J-Lo's costumes were inspired by Selena.

How white America says it's "not family-friendly" is beyond me.

What was clear was Beyonce's influence on a halftime show. A lot of her elements have been used by subsequent acts like Katy Perry, Madonna, and J-Lo/Shakira. The bar was raised by Bey's performance, and it shows.

The ladies, for a 50 and 38 year old, did great.

Inspired by Selena eek I don't think so.

I think some of the dancers costumes were inspired by Prince & Sheila E. With the one legged outfits.

It was entertaining but no match for Prince's. For me, it felt like way too much crammed into the time allotted making it feel chaotic. Now, I love me some JLo, but I thought Shakira stole the show.

I mean, I didn't make it up. She said it, so I can only take it at face value.

Didn't like it, the dancers seemed frantic and it had a gratuitous soft porn element.

Frantic? At the end, they did Champeta which is a stomping type dance with intricate footwork. It's a big part of Afro-Columbia culture. salsa and mapalé were also shown. To call a culture "frantic" feels really short-sighted, and slightly racist, if not wholly ignorant.

There was no soft porn element, unless one lives in under a rock. These women, especially J-Lo, were wearing (likely) 3-4 pairs of hose. Beyonce admitted to wearing 5 or 6 to keep her stuff in place. They were actually more covered than they were exposed. Their body suits were illusion, not skin baring. I mean, I figured adults would recognize that now. I wonder if people were as upset when Red Hot Chili Peppers were shirtless, or Adam Levine took his shirt off for "Moves like Jagger." Was anyone upset that Madonna had a gold star over her vagina in the shorts under her Roman gladiator skirt that peeked out on occasion? Was that "gratuitous soft porn"? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Folks may want to redefine for yourself what "soft porn" is, then try not to make such gratuitously irresponsible statements about Latino women embracing their culture upbringing.

I mean, the show was in Miami for fuck's sake, the "Latin Capital of America." We're not looking for an Amish chorale.

Madonna performed at the Super Bowl before Beyonce. Madonna did it in 2012, Beyonce in 2013.
So you could say Madonna started the big pop dance performances.
Shakira is actually 43.

Halftime was average at best. Just a lot of glitz and ass shaking. There are no more great iconic bands or artists do this, so it will only get worse. Next year will be Lizzo and Billy Elish. mad

Foo Fighters maybe? I've always thought they'd be a good fit ... their music probably sits well with the average football fan. Whether they'd actually do it though is another matter ...

Sorry DaveT, but the Foo Fighters do nothing for me. I honestly do not believe there are any real icons left. It would be great if Stevie could do it, but I hear he's not well. I don't think we'll see too many more awesome half time performances as the great ones are either dead or getting too old. Just my opinion, I know.
