Toni Tony Tone(session musicians documentary)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=i7Ax2RvG6qk

Very interesting documentary on the Tony's session/touring musicians called

Loyalty No Royalty. I can always remember seeing the 3 featured members on the

front of the album covers Who? and on the inside sleeve of The Revival with 3 more guys on the back Elijah Baker, Carl Wheeler, and Antron Haile.

I always thought the other 3 were just session/touring members but they say

they were always original members according to the original contracts but were totally

screwed by the 3 featured members Dewayne Wiggins, Raphael Wiggins(now Sadiiq) and

Timothy Christian. This is a serious interesting documentary put together by bassist Elijah Baker. It made me see the Tony's in a whole different light. It was definitely some shady shit going on here.

word...and youre leaving out the great guitarist Jubu Smith, who composed and played all those classic guitar riffs on "It Never Rains In Southern California", "Leavin", "Tell Me Mama", "Whatever You Want", "Lovin You", "Anniversary", etc...but the guitar work on all those TTT classics are almost always wrongly assumed to be created/played by Dwayne Wiggins...that documentary makes that clear too

Toni Tony Tone is a group that I know very little about even though I have always liked them since 1989 , and I still listen to their hits a lot. I don´t know why but I never felt the desire to find out more about them, which is something I usually do when I like an artist but with TTT, I never really bothered.

I just bought some of their CDs, and I know Raphael Sadiq and that he was in the Prince camp for a very brief time (Japanese leg of the Lovesexy tour? ) , I know and like the first Lucy Pearl album but that´s about it.

I still don´t have the slightest idea why they call themselves Toni, Tony, Tone when in fact none of them go by the name Tony (or Toni.....or Tone) . lol

lol

I´ve also heard rumors here and there about Raphael Sadiq being a bit shady but, again, I really don´t know much about him and don´t really care but I do like some of his later songs, and the work he did with D´Angelo and some other artists, but still.......for someone I quite like, I know basically nothing about him or any of his projects. This is something I just realized while reading this thread.

Thanks for this thread. I think I´ll watch that documentary.

I really like documentaries and stuff like the "Untold" episodes so I think I´ll watch this one, too.

.

.

Edit: Curiousity was killing me so I just had to google why they are called Tony , Toni, Tone. lol

I believe Raphael Saadiq/wiggins and Carl Wheeler were both in Sheila E's touring band for her 3rd album mini-tour which I saw twice.

You're right. I didn't mean to leave out Jubu but I didn't want to tell too much without people watching. I watched the first five minutes on my phone and
I said oh no I have to watch this on the big screen. I love Jubu's work and when you hear a certain Toni song you know his signature guitar sound. Like I said I don't want to tell too much about the documentary without others getting a chance to see it first but it's a lot that went down behind the scenes that the public was unaware of. I did know there was tension between Raphael and the other members during the House Of Music sessions to the point that Raphael recorded portions of the album away from the other members.

I watched the documentary last fall, and I agree that it is most enlightening toward the history of the band--origin and all the developments through their touring and recording experience. It'd be cool to get some discussion going after more people have checked this out. I've always loved the band's output, but this story explodes one's understanding of what went on in their dealings.

No. Look for his recent interview on Youtube with Sway as he addressed the documentary and his reunion with the Tony's. It's going to happen but it's only going to be short lived. He just performed in Charlotte last Wednesday supporting his new Jimmy Lee album. I wanted to go but I had some other events going on this past week so I couldn't make it.

After watching the documentary I stilll like the Tony's but they were foul as hell as far as business goes and I'm glad Ray's cousin Elijah coming for they ass. lol

I saw Raphael open for Lenny a few years back, he put on a great show!

Dwayne might have been a bit of a ass but he did his thing on

House Of Music. Last Summer was one of my favorite tracks on there.

Tossin And Turnin was pretty slick too.
