Teddy Pendergrass Appreciation Thread

Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don't Know Me (2018) A thought provoking and moving doco about the rise, the fall and the comeback of this incredible talent. I really loved watching all the concert footage, however, I just wished that they talked about his duet with Whitney Houston, because Hold Me (1984) helped to launch her career. Nevertheless, I give this a 4 out of 5 popcorn My all-time fav song of Teddy's is the classic Turn Off The Lights from his Live in London 1982, Hammersmith Odeon https://www.youtube.com/w...SrEdpW3PoM it's EVERYTHING

I was pretty horrified by the implication that he'd been involved in murdering his first manager. Songs he'd SUNG have gotten me through (*or INCREDIBLY HELPED) some hard ordeals and times. Learning the dirty shady shit didn't help much for me. But I've always loved the work done with stuff like life is a song with singing, his singing with Harold Melvin "Wake up" (*such a simple and profound song whether contrived or not)

And my favourite "cold cold world".

The mastery of that track and it's players with his voice are a spiritual gift.

Just truly horrified to acknowledge the (likely) "steps" taken to get there

Gamble & Huff's productions had amazing chemistry with Teddy's vocal stylings the same way that Al Green had amazing chemistry with Willie Mitchell's productions.

Teddy Pendergrass albums...

Drop the needle and walk away because what you are about to hear is an amazing voice and artistry. Mr Pendergrass has been apart of my playlist since Sep. 2019.

"Love TKO" and "The Whole Towns Laughing at Me" get much play around my home! TP was an unbelievably talented singer. I really miss that era of music.

damn...i completely forgot about "The Whole Towns Laughing At Me"...great great song...also even though it was technically a Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes song, "Bad Luck" was my shit, too...amazingly produced philly soul.

Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff were the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis of the 70s...Jimmy Jam even himself says that when he first started playing in his first real band (Mind & Matter), he was heavily influenced by Gamble and Huff, and you easily hear it in those early Mind&Matter recordings from the mid to late 70s

I was equally horrified by the idea that Teddy's accident wasn't an accident. And that his injuries were made worse by the prolonging of him getting medical attention because the authorities were more interested in a photo opportunity.

My aunt who pretty much raised me was the biggest Teddy fan. So I remember when all this happened. But being just a child I didn't know any of the details.

A little off topic but my favorite sample use of Teddy Pendergrass is Hip Hop's Prince of Darkness, the Big Daddy Kane-- "In The PJ's".

Lets not forget how much Harold ripped him off too.

That never made sense! My records say Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, but I assume they were printed later when Teddy made a name for hisself
