All I Want For Christmas is You: Mariah classic finally tops US chart! ๐ ... after 25 years of it being released! 'Mariah Carey's classic festive song All I Want For Christmas is You has finally topped the US charts - 25 years after it was first released. When the hit song made its debut in 1994 it was as an EP and not a single, meaning it wasn't allowed to compete in Billboard's Hot 100. Rule changes saw the song first enter the chart in 2000 and in recent years it has edged closer to the top spot. "We did it," Carey tweeted, with a string of emojis to convey happy tears.' Read more

Goody goody gumdrops ๐. Now if they played that version instead of 20 other awful versions in quick succession at work I'd be jamming. The way my brain is set up hearing the same garbage incessantly (a word I learned from a Mariah song no less) makes it snap ๐คฏ. Makes he hate this time of year even more. 6 more shifts ๐. Slightly off topic rant over ๐๐ค For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I've been hearing this one everywhere this year... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

That one song alone pulls millions of dollars into her bank account every year. Its the song that keeps on giving. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I think itโs supercool she is associated with Christmas like thriller is associated with Halloween

We knew it was a classic when it was only ten years old, and now it marks its twenty-fifth anniversary and it is her nineteeth number one!

No one will ever come close to the genius of the original but here is a remake that's pretty damn good from the much slept on Soul genius of PJ Morton. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

oh joy. clap.clap.clap. When this horrific song is shoved down your throats or up your ass. Every Single.Year. Her first hit (if you want to call it that) in over 10 years, to put that in perspective... George W Bush was in the White House

I love the actual song, though not her chicken-thin voice when singing it, but....I just saw the "new" video and.....it seems to be ugh! nothing but.....*an ad for Mariah Carey*!! Like, with proper branding and everything - they've got her as an exhibit in a shop WINDOW, for God's sake!!
I think I just lost my love for the actual SONG, which is the Worst thing that could happen - hey I didn't even know it was a remake!! kit - who is the original by??? Merry Christmas, everybody!

I didnโt even know it was a remake, I thought she wrote the song

She co-wrote the song and released it first: Second Hand Songs. Mariah did put out a re-recorded version with Jermaine Dupri (So So Def Remix). It's similar to B.B. King & James Brown remaking their own songs in different years. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit whoโs never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The local shopping centre used this song as a torture device on me and thousands of other innocent shoppers. They didn't stop there. They insisted on playing her whole Christmas album on repeat. I'm still recovering.

As one of the original Mariah stans on this board, I should be over the moon with her hitting number one on the Hot 100, and while I am quite happy for her, I just wanted to opine on what is now the streaming era. 5. Futsal Shuffle 2020 - Lil Uzi Vert 6. A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives 8. Someone You Loved - Lewis Capaldi 9. Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms 11. Dance Monkey - Tones and I 12. Lose You To Love Me - Selena Gomez 13. 10,000 Hours - Dan + Shay 15. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - Andy Williams 16. BOP - DaBaby 19. Bandit - Juice WRLD feat. YoungBoy Never Broke Again 23. Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano 30. The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole 40. Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season - Andy Williams

I think Donny's song is mostly played on R&B radio just like Silent Night by The Temptations. Those songs didn't really crossover. There's a local adult contemporary station that starts playing Christmas music exclusively at the beginning of November every year. They play that Burl Ives song a lot every year. The station plays a lot of 1940s & 1950s era easy listening Christmas songs by singers like Johnny Mathis, so some placing high on the chart (ig. Andy Williams) doesn't surprise me. I don't hear John Lennon's song much, but they do play Wonderful Christmastime by Paul quite a bit. I don't think the "war is over" lyrics is what the general public wants to hear at this time of year. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit whoโs never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

. Sorry but your comment above about Mariah's singles sales lagging is actually incorrect. If anything single sales were her strength throughout the 90's. "Can't Let Go" would have been her 6th #1 but Columbia made the decision to pull the single from stores to try and stimulate sales of the "Emotions" album so it stalled at #2. . As for "All I Want For Christmas Is You", it didn't chart in 1994 in the US because it was not eligible. You are correct in stating that chart positons were determined by a combination of single sales and airplay - Columbia decided not to issue a physical single so consumers had no choice but to buy the "Merry Christmas" album to own it. The song was however issued in other territories and sold over a million copies in Japan, similarly in the UK and almost half a million copies in Australia. The song surely would have gone to number #1 in the US at the time had a single been available.

How can she be the first to chart in four different decades when the decade hasn't even started yet. Anyhow, this article completely spells it out.

well it only took 25 years, better late than never I guess.... If only these Mariah fans would buy her new music like that, she would be more relevant on the music scene again.
