All I Want For Christmas is You: Mariah classic finally tops US chart! ๐ŸŽ„

... after 25 years of it being released! woot! xmas snowflake

'Mariah Carey's classic festive song All I Want For Christmas is You has finally topped the US charts - 25 years after it was first released.

When the hit song made its debut in 1994 it was as an EP and not a single, meaning it wasn't allowed to compete in Billboard's Hot 100.

Rule changes saw the song first enter the chart in 2000 and in recent years it has edged closer to the top spot.

"We did it," Carey tweeted, with a string of emojis to convey happy tears.' Read more

Goody goody gumdrops ๐Ÿ˜„. Now if they played that version instead of 20 other awful versions in quick succession at work I'd be jamming. The way my brain is set up hearing the same garbage incessantly (a word I learned from a Mariah song no less) makes it snap ๐Ÿคฏ. Makes he hate this time of year even more. 6 more shifts ๐Ÿ™. Slightly off topic rant over ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค

No one will ever come close to the genius of the original but here is a remake that's pretty damn good from the much slept on Soul genius of PJ Morton.

I love the actual song, though not her chicken-thin voice when singing it, but....I just saw the "new" video and.....it seems to be ugh! nothing but.....*an ad for Mariah Carey*!! Like, with proper branding and everything - they've got her as an exhibit in a shop WINDOW, for God's sake!!

WHOSE FUCKING BULLSHIT IDEA WAS THIS??????

I think I just lost my love for the actual SONG, which is the Worst thing that could happen - hey I didn't even know it was a remake!! kit - who is the original by??? smile

She co-wrote the song and released it first: Second Hand Songs. Mariah did put out a re-recorded version with Jermaine Dupri (So So Def Remix). It's similar to B.B. King & James Brown remaking their own songs in different years.

The local shopping centre used this song as a torture device on me and thousands of other innocent shoppers. They didn't stop there. They insisted on playing her whole Christmas album on repeat.

I'm still recovering.

As one of the original Mariah stans on this board, I should be over the moon with her hitting number one on the Hot 100, and while I am quite happy for her, I just wanted to opine on what is now the streaming era.

Some will ask why it took so long for this song to hit the top of the charts,a nd why it didn't top the charts back when it was first released in 1994. Partly because it wasn't that customary for huge established artists to release Christmas music back then (and it still isn't), and also because the Hot 100 was based half on sales and half on radio airplay. Even though her song was actually quite wildly popular when it was first releaed, single sales at that time was increasingly being dominated by CD singles, whcih were quite expensive relative to cassette singles, which wre being driven out of the market. So despite getting a huge amount of airplay on top 40, R&B, and even adult contemporary stations at that time, her single sales numbers lagged far behind, so many of her sales actually went to her album instead. In fact, this wasn't unusual, as the only Christmas song to top the Billboard charts until Mariah was "The Chipmunk Song", whcih was a clear novelty single as much as it was a Christmas single. I will say that this was one of the greatest written and compsoed Christmas songs of all time, as it retained its popularity while tone of other Christmas singles blew up when they were released only to fall off in popularity over the years and are only vaguely remembered by sone die-hard fans.

Which brings me to the current Hot 100. These days, radio airplay still accounts for some of the chart rankings, but it is mostly dominated by internet streaming. Not only is it much easier to determine what is popular based on the number of streams of a single, but whole playlists can be created for streaming services. THis explains why the current Hot 100 is dominated this time of year by Christmas singles but particularly old Christmas singles.

I expected Mariah to be pretty popular even today, but I certainly wasn't expecting Burl Ives or Andy Williams to be charting alongside Post Malone or DaBaby. What irtks me is the absence of Donny Hathaway, John Lennon, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, or even Run DMC with their Christmas songs. I also thought Pentatonix would be represented here.

I think Donny's song is mostly played on R&B radio just like Silent Night by The Temptations. Those songs didn't really crossover. There's a local adult contemporary station that starts playing Christmas music exclusively at the beginning of November every year. They play that Burl Ives song a lot every year. The station plays a lot of 1940s & 1950s era easy listening Christmas songs by singers like Johnny Mathis, so some placing high on the chart (ig. Andy Williams) doesn't surprise me. I don't hear John Lennon's song much, but they do play Wonderful Christmastime by Paul quite a bit. I don't think the "war is over" lyrics is what the general public wants to hear at this time of year.

looking at this I am very curious the breakdowns with singles in general with streams and airplay and actual sales of the song. Kind of like what they do with albums when they say ex. 130,000 sold, 128,000 actual units bought. I still can't take streaming serious as a number of any kind because you haven't bought anything you're renting it and you will never own it and probably forget u have it rented. As for things missing notice how almost no new Xmas stuff is played, the absence of new Christmas released getting AirPlay is not there at all, though they may actually be sold no one is playing the new Lea Michele or Kacey Musgraves singing the same old songs. That's why this chart is a reflection of straight traditional oldies station play with the exception of Wham and Mariah which were the classics of the last half century. I am surprised by Donny however I tend to hear a lot of versions of that song and not too much the original, as for Lennon I am not surprised because of The PC mind set and hateful times we live in, I heard this song more on the radio in the 80's with Band Aid and things like that, not so much now, these are not charitable times anymore.

.

Sorry but your comment above about Mariah's singles sales lagging is actually incorrect. If anything single sales were her strength throughout the 90's. "Can't Let Go" would have been her 6th #1 but Columbia made the decision to pull the single from stores to try and stimulate sales of the "Emotions" album so it stalled at #2.

.

As for "All I Want For Christmas Is You", it didn't chart in 1994 in the US because it was not eligible. You are correct in stating that chart positons were determined by a combination of single sales and airplay - Columbia decided not to issue a physical single so consumers had no choice but to buy the "Merry Christmas" album to own it. The song was however issued in other territories and sold over a million copies in Japan, similarly in the UK and almost half a million copies in Australia. The song surely would have gone to number #1 in the US at the time had a single been available.
