Reissue Talk #39

raw_480-480x490.jpg

3CD deluxe • 3LP vinyl • Loads of bonus remixes

Neneh Cherry‘s debut album Raw Like Sushi is being reissued as multi-disc CD and vinyl sets for its 30th anniversary in January.

The 1989 album was actually 30 back in June, but such quibbles aside, it was an enormous success back in the day, spawning two top ten hits on both side of the Atlantic, including the best known single Buffalo Stance.

This seems to be a fairly ambitious reissue campaign with a 3LP vinyl super deluxe which includes the remastered album with two records of B-sides, remixes and extras and a 3CD set which adds more remixes. However, unless there’s been an error with the track listings, a close look reveals that ‘Kisses On The Wind’ B-side ‘Buffalo Blues’ is included on the 3LP set but not the 3CD package. Weird. Incidentally, original CD bonus tracks ‘My Bitch’ and ‘Heart (It’s A Demo)’ are retained, while the remixes from the end of the 1989 CD are moved to the other discs.

Also, the 3CD set is large format with a 48-page book, which might account for the eyebrow-raising cost. The 3LP set isn’t cheap either and again that comes with the book. As you can see the cover art has been reworked from the familiar photo on white background.

Single disc remastered CD and vinyl are also available for those who want it.

Raw Like Sushi will be reissued on 24 January 2020.

Description
It’s just over 40 years since global music icon Dionne Warwick signed with Arista Records marking a defining fifteen-year chapter in the star-studded career of the Lifetime Achievement and multi-Grammy-winning songstress, celebrated here with this first-of-its-kind box set of her (159) recordings for the label. Included are (29) bonus tracks, with nine of the twelve albums as expanded editions of the original Arista LPs, with remastering by Nick Robbins. The deluxe 64-page booklet (with artwork by Roger Williams) includes detailed essays on each album by SoulMusic.com/SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan (who credits Dionne’s mid-60s hits as fuelling his passion for soul music), with quotes from Dionne, Clive Davis and producer Steve Buckingham.

Disc 1, DIONNE marked the rejuvenation of the famed entertainer’s career as an international hitmaker, with then-labelmate Barry Manilow producing Dionne’s first platinum-selling LP with the classics ‘I’ll Never Love This Way Again’ and ‘Déjà Vu’, garnering the singer two Grammy Awards. An expanded edition with three bonus tracks left over from the early 1979 sessions.

Disc 2, 1980’s NO NIGHT SO LONG was produced by then Atlanta-based Steve Buckingham with the title cut achieving US Top 30 and Top 20 R&B status. An expanded edition with nine bonus tracks (two of which were originally released on Dionne’s third Arista set and a number of which were planned for inclusion on that LP but shelved) as well as the rare ‘B’ side, ‘This Time Is Ours’.

Disc 3, 1981’s HOT! LIVE & OTHERWISE, a Steve Buckingham-produced live recording of Dionne’s shows at Harrah’s in Reno including the famous 20-minute ‘Hit Records Medley’; with studio cuts (produced by Michael Masser) from the ‘Otherwise’ side of the LP. Expanded edition with two bonus ‘live’ tracks (‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and ‘Welcome To My World’) along with CD debut of the ‘live’ version of ‘We Never Said Goodbye’.

Disc 4, 1982’s FRIENDS IN LOVE, produced by renowned musician/songwriter Jay Graydon, features Dionne’s US Top 40 hit duet with Johnny Mathis along with original compositions by Stevie Wonder and Tom Snow along with distinctive cover versions of ‘Can’t Hide Love’ (EW&F) and “Betcha By Golly Wow” (The Stylistics), considered musically one of Dionne’s best Arista albums.

Disc 5, 1982s HEARTBREAKER, Dionne’s biggest-selling LP to date (with over 3 million sales), a worldwide success thanks to the title track, “All The Love In The World” and “Take The Short Way Home.” Produced by Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten & Karl Richardson with (8) songs written specifically for Dionne. Expanded edition with a demo duet with Barry Gibb of ‘Let It Be Me’.

Disc 6, 1983’s HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE SAY GOODBYE (released in Europe as “So Amazing”), produced by Luther Vandross, featuring the U.S. Top 10 R&B and Top 30 pop charted title track and a musical reunion with Dionne’s 60s Scepter label-mates, The Shirelles on ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’. Expanded edition with a dance mix of ‘Got A Date’.

Disc 7, 1985’s FINDER OF LOST LOVES, an expanded edition with five bonus tracks including the original Dionne & Luther duet from the US television series of the same name (a musical reunion with Burt Bacharach) and duets with Barry Manilow, Stevie Wonder and Glenn Jones.

Disc 8, FRIENDS, the 1985 US gold-certified LP featuring the timeless global anthem, award-winning ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ (with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & Elton John) which raised over $3 million for AIDS research; and key originals ‘Whisper In The Dark’ and ‘How Long’.

Disc 9, 1987’s RESERVATIONS FOR TWO, with the hit duets ‘Love Power’ (with Jeffrey Osborne) and the title track (with Kashif). An expanded edition with three bonus tracks including ‘Take Good Care Of You And Me’ with Osborne and ‘Who’s Counting Heartaches’ with Johnny Mathis.

Disc 10, 1990’s DIONNE WARWICK SINGS COLE PORTER, an inspired tribute to the renowned late composer, produced by Arif Mardin and including time-honoured standards such as ‘Night And Day’, ‘You’re The Top’; with ‘You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To’.

Disc 11, 1993’s FRIENDS CAN BE LOVERS with production by Ian Devaney & Andy Morris (of Lisa Stansfield fame), Dionne’s son David Elliott (on ‘Love Will Find A Way’, Dionne’s duet with cousin Whitney Houston) and Barry J. Eastmond; an expanded edition with three bonus tracks including the 1989 charted single ‘I Don’t Need Another Love’, duet with The Spinners and, “A True Love,” Dionne’s duet with French music legend Sacha Distel.

.

I agree! Also, how the hell are they going to go digital only on an artist like Patti? Her audience would still buy CDs. Universal are just being cheap.

SoulMusic Records is very proud to present a 97-track, 6-CD box set of the eight full albums (plus bonus tracks and mixes) recorded for Atco, Cotillion and Atlantic by the internationally-renowned family group, Sister Sledge. Unquestionably one of the most successful female teams of the ‘70s and ‘80s, the Philly-born quartet are best known for enduring classics such as ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’, the anthemic ‘We Are Family’, ‘Got To Love Somebody’, ‘All American Girls’ and the No. 1 UK hit ‘Frankie’: this deluxe box set is a scintillating showcase for the diverse range of R&B, dance and pop material the sisters (Kathy, Debbie, Joni and Kim) cut over a twelve-year period that brought them global fame.

• An outstanding, informative and extensive essay by renowned US writer Justin Kantor chronicles the group’s recording history with direct quotes primarily from Kathy Sledge and additional comments by producer Phil Hurtt, vocalist Alfa Anderson and musician Nick Mundy from interviews conducted specifically for the 10,000-word liner notes. This and the first class mastering by Nick Robbins and stellar artwork by Roger Williams make this a ‘must have’ collection for the group’s many fans worldwide, reflective – as their recording career progressed – of their aptitude as songwriters and burgeoning producers.

• Disc One comprises an expanded edition of the group’s 1975 debut Atco LP, CIRCLE OF LOVE (with production by Bert DeCoteaux & Tony Silvester), with nine bonus tracks (including the UK charted single, ‘Mama Never Told Me’) plus the first two tracks from the 1977 album, TOGETHER produced by Michael Kunze & Sylvester Levay.

• Disc Two features the remaining ten tracks from the TOGETHER album as well as the CD debut of the ‘A’ and ‘B’ side of a rare single (‘I’ve Seen Better Days’/‘Do It To The Max’), produced by Brad Shapiro and the first five tracks of the 1979 platinum-certified WE ARE FAMILY LP. Produced by Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards.

• Disc Three contains the remaining three tracks from WE ARE FAMILY and the entire follow-up LP, 1980’s Rodgers & Edwards’ -produced LOVE SOMEBODY TODAY and the first five tracks from 1981 set ALL AMERICAN GIRLS, produced by Narada Michael Walden in association with Sister Sledge, marking the group’s first production credits.

• Disc Four kicks off with the remaining five tracks from ALL AMERICAN GIRLS plus 1982’s THE SISTERS, the group’s sixth LP, which they arranged and produced (featuring covers of Mary Wells’ classic, ‘My Guy’ and ‘All The Man I Need’, later popularized by Whitney Houston); and the first three tracks from 1983’s BET CHA SAY THAT TO ALL THE GIRLS, produced by George Duke.

• Disc Five is composed of the remaining seven tracks from BET CHA SAY THAT TO ALL THE GIRLS plus the group’s final Atlantic LP, 1985’s WHEN THE BOYS MEET THE GIRLS, produced by Nile Rodgers.

• Disc Six – appropriately titled “Lost In Music” – includes ten different dance mixes of six of Sister Sledge’s most memorable hits ranging from Tom Moulton’s 1976 remix of ‘Mama Never Told Me’ to the 1985 Club Mix of ‘Frankie’, a fitting conclusion for this superb box set with a running time of over seven hours of wonderful music by this pioneering musical family.

Robert Flack "First Take" 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edtion Available In April 2020 Exclusively At Soulmusic.com

Last year marked half a century since Roberta Flack introduced her one-of-a-kind style to the world with her 1969 album First Take. From the start, it was an album storming with personality, showcasing her thunderous, yet heartfelt delivery.

SoulMusic.com commemorates the singer and pianist's platinum debut with First Take: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, a limited edition 2CD/1LP set release that features a remastered version of the original album on both vinyl and CD, along with a disc of bonus rarities, live performances and 12 unreleased demos, all in a 12”x12” hardbound book. The demos stem from songs Flack initially recorded during her audition with Atlantic Records in 1968, including "This Could Be The Start of Something" and other jazz-oriented numbers.

Select tracks will be available via digital download and streaming services beginning February 14, starting with the unreleased track "Groove Me." The full deluxe edition arrives April 10, set for release a few days before Flack will be presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on April 18, marking Flack's fifth Grammy Award to date. Pre-orders of the deluxe set are available now, exclusively HERE on SoulMusic.com.

The set comes accompanied with liner notes by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan, who also co-produced this reissue, and two essays by pianist-vocalist Les McCann, who played an instrumental role in helping Flack score a recording contract with Atlantic Records. McCann recalled his first time hearing Flack perform at a club in Washington D.C., "What I heard touched me on a level that I have never heard since...When my time on this earth is over, in my heart, I want to carry Roberta's voice back home so the Angels can hear." The classic album includes the iconic single "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It wasn't until three years after its release that the song charted atop the Pop and R&B Charts thanks to being featured in Clint Eastwood's 1971 film Play Misty for Me. Flack also has the distinct honor of winning Record of the Year for two consecutive years as a solo artist - with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in 1973 and "Killing Me Softly With His Song" in 1974. Flack is welcoming in the new decade with a rare appearance at this weekend's Grammys to accept the Recording Academy's lifetime achievement award.

“It's a tremendous and overwhelming honor,” the singer shared with The Guardian. “I’ve tried my entire career to tell stories through my music. This award is a validation to me that my peers heard my thoughts and took in what I have tried to give.”

Roberta Flack First Take: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is available only at SoulMusic.com for $49.98 and is strictly limited to 3,000 copies. It ships April 10. Pre-order at soulmusic.com.
