Mary J. Blige dominated the charts in the 1990s by way of her seamless infusion of Hip-Hop and R&B music, along with passionate vocals that carried emotional peaks and valleys of both tragedy and triumph. Next month, fans of the Queen of Hip Hop Soul will be able to get their hands on an extensive box set, HERstory Vol. 1, that will cover many of Blige’s hits and share some rare mixes in a variety of physical formats.

.

Since 1992, Blige has managed to become one of the top acts in her genre both on the road and on the charts, including notching her name in the annals of history as an award-winning actress. With HERstory Vol. 1, those new to Blige or have been riding with her since the beginning will have the opportunity to visit and revisit her classic style over and over again.

.

The collection will be released in three physical forms: eight standard-weight black 7-inch vinyl records, a single CD version, a two-LP vinyl set. There will also be a digital set available as well.

HERstory Vol. 1 features tracks and remixes from her smash triple-platinum debut album What’s The 411? including the remix of the title track featuring K-Ci (of Jodeci fame). The set also highlights track from her second album My Life, which also went triple-platinum and features the remix for the single “I Love You” featuring verses from veteran Hip-Hop duo, Smif-N-Wesson and the Grammy Award-winning “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By” featuring Method Man.

.

For fans who snag a copy of the physical copy of the box set, they’ll be rewarded with Jay-Z’s “Can’t Knock The Hustle” featuring vocals from Blige from the Brooklyn mogul’s 1996 classic debut album, Reasonable Doubt.

.

Mary J. Blige’s HERstory Vol. 1 will be released to the public on December 6. Check out the tracklisting from the double LP below.

Looks vaguely reminiscent of the Beat Street soundtrack.

.

I find the tracklist a bit disappointing. And I think What´s the 411 wasn´t really that great of a song to be included here, especially the Puba remix, but to each his own.

I'm surprised it doesn't include Dolly My Baby or the Christopher Williams' duet. Maybe for part 2?

I consider myself a casual, yet attentive Mary fan and I didn't know she once released a full on 8+ minute cover of Stairway To Heaven. And that it is as bad as it potentially sounds lol

It’s a sorry excuse for a compilation, don’t care if it’s the first volume. I hate to see bad things happening for potentially good projects. And this is MJB, why half ass it?

Oh, I see. I totally agree.

I like MJB, used to be a big fan when her debut album and My Life came out, followed her until her fourth or fifth album and kinda lost interest at some point (also saw her live in concert in the late 90s) and I think she deserves a better compilation than this. Odd choice of songs and remixes.

Exactly! It would’ve been more fruitful had they made remastered limited edition treatment of “My Life” full with the remixes & the songs she did for soundtracks at the time (like her version of Chaka’s “Everlasting Love”).

Actually, I saw it on CD and it was much more tempting as I was USED to seeing those mixes on 12" vinyl. The design was cuter that way too.

Like, these were from My Life era singles, so they are not on What's The 411? Remix album, but the first half of this release is essentially the 411 Remix album.

Its criminal that the remix of "Be With You" featuring Lauryn Hill is not included in this set.

This is golden, classic stuff.

Mary(whom I met at a ULTRA private screening of "MudBound") is really a sweet down to earth women.

Also congrats to her on landing the lead role in the "Power" spin off on the Starz network..

Well, what do you know, I went and got this on CD and still quite enjoying it. I don't ever remembering hearing Real Love starting with an acapella of the "beena ROUND the world and HIGH and low and" part. It's nice to have some of these 12" mixes on CD.

I always felt Mary was ahead of her time musically and set the tone for female r&b/hip hop fusion of the 90s

The style of her album was all about what mixtape DJs were ALL doing by 1991, mixing R&B with hip hop instrumentals, but it took an artist like her to brave it and bring it to the masses.

Ironically, I heard that by 1997 (where this compilation ends) she was asking why everything she sang over had to be a sample. eek
