Whitney Houston's Best Friend Robyn Crawford Recalls...

...Recalls Their First Kiss: 'Long and Slow Like Honey'

Ashley Boucher

Robyn Crawford is opening up about her relationship with Whitney Houston — and revealing when the pair shared their first kiss.

her new memoir, A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston, excerpted exclusively in this week's PEOPLE, Crawford writes that she and Houston fell in love the first summer they met in 1980. Crawford was 19 and the singer was about to turn 17, and they were both counselors at a summer camp in East Orange, New Jersey."We wanted to be together and it was just us," Crawford tells PEOPLE.

"The physical part of our friendship happened along the way and it was just as beautiful," she says. "We were on a journey together and we were connected."

They shared their first kiss together that summer when Whitney invited Robyn over to her house.

"We talked and talked," writes Crawford. "And then all of a sudden, we were face to face. The first kiss was long and slow, like honey. As we eased out of it, my nerves shot up and my heart beat furiously. Something was happening between us."

The pair were intimate shortly after they shared their first kiss. They spent the night at the home of a friend.

"At the apartment, we took off our clothes, and for the first time, we touched each other," she writes. "Caressing her and loving her felt like a dream."

As Crawford recounts in her book, the physical part of their relationship ended after a few years, when Houston said they could no longer be intimate shortly after she signed a record deal with Clive Davis at Arista, in 1982.

"She said we shouldn't be physical anymore because it would make our journey even more difficult," Crawford wrote in the book. "She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us, and back in the '80s that's how it felt."

Crawford added that Houston's family — especially her mom, Cissy Houston — told them "it wasn't natural for two women to be that close."

I saw Robyn's interview on Today this morning. She will also be on Dateline this weekend. This is one book I will probably have to check out.

I just find it really sad that, in an industry that was run by a lot LGBT folk, its artists, particularly artists of color, were forced to stay in the closet if they wanted to have a successful career. I think things are definately changing in the music industry with the recent success of what's-his-face (the rapper) but there is still a lot of progress to be made.

Agree. I think she was Whitneys' 'rock'.

The reason this happend with Whitney (and a certain popular ex-child pop singer turned successful adult singer) is, IMHO, because of the black community's attitude towards LGBT people and their respective families, as mentioned in the article about what happened to Whitney & Robyn. Whitney wanted to come out and be with Robyn, but her parents (and the wider society) kiboshed that, so Whitney had to stay in the closet and marry a man to keep up the expected heterosexual straight appearence. Of course, all of that, plus whatever stresses were there contributed to her substance abuse and her early death. The wider society (and the Afro-American community in particular) has a lot to answer for in regards to situations like this, especially when they cause results like this to happen.

Damn shame...makes me love her more to know she was family. It was stated in Whitney by her brothers and even Bobby had suspicions about it. It was a totally different time back in the day and not many were out the closet like that...she was no Prince or Boy george..and how many entertainers who were women were out in the early 80s? Basically no one....

True. I always thought the fact that Nippy couldn't be honest with the world about who she really was contributed towards her drug addiction and her life spiraling out of control.

Robin will be interviewed by Wendy Willams on Tuesday, Nov. 12 @ 10:00 PST. Wendy said they talked for an hour last week on the phone. I think Wendy will be fair.

That's funny...Wendy is astute about people and will likely 'behave' during this interview.

Oh please! Wendy doesn't even come close to Oprah. Wendy is an abrasive bitch with not an ounce of class. Oprah is head over heels above her. I wish Robyn would stay away from that show.

And what does that have to do with anything? Crackhead or not, Whitney made it well known that she didn't like Wendy Williams or the games she played with people's lives. Wendy Williams like to gossip and trash others lives, and is such a hypocrite in that aspect because her life was no better than those she trashed and gossiped about. Why in the world would Robin go on her show of all shows, to discuss Whitney?

Robin called Wendy. They spoke for an hour on the phone last week. You don't have to watch it.

Oprah can be sanctimonious and a bore at times. I don't like the way she did Prince back in '96.

Y'all should call Robyn before it's too late and warn her...

Do not tell me what I don't have to watch just because I made a comment, whether I choose to watch or not, will be my decision only.

We've been knowing about Robyn and Whitney's relationship.

A former acquaintance of mine knew Robin and knew all about it back then. (The acquaintance worked for Toni Braxton for years, so she was in the business quite deeply; God you should hear the story about her seeing Stokley's dick, or that time when she covered so Toni & Maxwell could fuck...I've said too much? LOL) Whit & Robyn go way back.

But yeah, it's Robyn's story to tell, so whatever.

Come on TrivialPursuit, do you have to be so vulgar with your language? Not all posters use foul language, or like reading it, and you should be mindful of that, and more respectable. I know that we're supposed to be all adults here (I think)..but you could have said "Stokley's penis" and "so Toni & Maxwell could have sex" instead of using the language you did. Thank you.

No LoveGalore, I didn't just rail on someone, and I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do! I'm just asking other posters to show consideration for fellow posters here that may not use expletives, and don't like reading them, that's all!

Nahhh, see, actually what you did is even worse.

"Do you have to be so vulgar? Not everyone likes foul language. You could've said this or that."

vs

"You don't have to watch it."

Only one of these is actually telling someone what to do. I assume whether we speak with foul language or not is our prerogative and it doesn't actually impinge on you one way or the other because you don't have to participate in these discussions nor read the threads because you know people here don't give a shit about that.

I saw Robyn's interview on Dateline on Saturday. Although I already knew this, she confirmed Nippy's drug usage was an issue from the very beginning of her career. It didn't just start with Bobby. She said they were getting high on the very first tour. But, Nippy was still able to function so the public had no idea there was a problem. It wasn't until later when the addiction really started to affect her career when she started cancelling shows and wandering aimlessly on stage, confused and talking thru most of the songs.
