Baby It's Cold Outside (rapey?) for the #MeToo generation

I think this level of reaching is troubling. Again, another instance where someones feelings is now defining how things should be seen. Was someone ever raped because of this song?

I think it is a bit disrespectful to the writer of the song.

.
We even had a member that straight out felt Lady Cab Driver was Prince raping Jill Jones.

.
Clearly about two people in love during a winter night out on the town.
Hell I don't know how many times, in a very platonic way, friends and family has tried to get me to stay around with similar words. Everytime I visit my Aunt and Uncle in their late 70s/early 80s, they try to keep me longer, even reminding me I could spend the night.
And people should just not listen to it, if it disturbs them so.
No remake and rewrite is needed.

.

I reallyโ€…can't stay (Baby it's cold outside)
I'veโ€…gotta go away (I can call you a ride)
This evening has been (So glad that you dropped in)
So very nice (Time spent with you is paradise)
My mother will start to worry (I'll call a car and tell 'em to hurry)

.

The lyrics of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' have been updated by John Legend for the #MeToo generation

The new PC version of the Christmas classic is sung as a duet by Legend and fellow Voice coach Kelly Clarkson.

.

By Corky Siemaszko

Baby, your ride's outside.

The lyrics of Frank Loesser's venerable and contentious Christmas season song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" have received an update more befitting the #MeToo era from John Legend and comedian Natasha Rockwell.

.

Legend and fellow Voice coach Kelly Clarkson recorded this new version of the Oscar-winning classic for Legend's first Christmas album, which is due out next month.

Based on a sampling of the lyrics provided by Legend's people, no longer is this Christmas classic about an extremely persistent fellow trying to convince a lady to spend the night with him by plying her with liquor and telling her the weather outside is frightful.

.

Instead of hinting at date rape, which is what some critics contend the song is alluding too, when Clarkson sings "I've gotta go away," Legend responds with "I can call you a ride," rather than just singing "baby, it's cold outside."

.

And when Clarkson frets about her mother starting to worry, Legend's response is "I'll call a car and tell 'em to hurry" rather than the original, "Beautiful, what's your hurry?"

Other revamped lyrics were revealed in a recent Vanity Fair profile of Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen.

"What will my friends think?" Clarkson sings at one point.

"I think they should rejoice," Legend sings back.

"If I have one more drink," Clarkson sings.

"It's your body, and your choice," Legend replies.

Writer Karen Valby's review? "The song's every bit as fun and swinging as the original," she wrote.

Music fans will be able to decide for themselves when "A Legendary Christmas: The Deluxe Edition" is released Nov. 8 by Columbia Records.

It's not rapey. Never was, never will be. I get tired of snowflake liberals (and frankly conservatives too) trying to fuck stuff up. I don't believe "Blurred Lines" was rapey either.

Are they going to remake Bill Cosby's Christmas song? I mean that one is rapey for sure, but jeez just leave the song alone. Some people are so sensually and sociall disconnected.

I agree with you TrivialPursuit.

My parents had this album in their collection of oldies. They never complained about it and had no issues listening to it.

Mr. Legend is cooking up a sanitized remix of "Extra Loveable" where he offers a platonic car ride home during the bridge instead.

Y'know what's too rapey? Rape.

Don't like it, don't listen to it...that's the amazing thing about music, art and words.

Here's some info about this song from 1944.

In 1944, Loesser wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside" to sing with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave. Garland has written that after the first performance, "We became instant parlor room stars. We got invited to all the best parties for years on the basis of 'Baby.' It was our ticket to caviar and truffles. Parties were built around our being the closing act." In 1948, after years of performing the song, Loesser sold it to MGM for the 1949 romantic comedy Neptune's Daughter. Garland was furious: "I felt as betrayed as if I'd caught him in bed with another woman." The song won the 1949 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

John Legend and that full moon face wife of his are annoying as hell! I used to like John Legend but now I can't stand him! For God sake, leave the song alone, and stop trying to force others to do what you want them to do, so sick of these people! mad Come Christmas, I'm going to blast the original version of Baby It's Cold Outside, and I don't give a damn what John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, or anyone else thinks or feels about it!

As someone who frankly believes political correctness hasn't gone far enough can I just say that changing the lyrics to this song is such a dumb idea. It may have been possible to change the lyrics if they bothered him so much but these new lyrics are so cringey and on the nose, no one is winning here.

When Prince started changing Sexuality into Spirituality there was a level of knowing silliness where he got away with it, this on the other hand is more on par with changing The Cross into The Christ.

I love the original song. My favourite version is the Tom Jones one.

It's kind of funny though. Last Christmas I made a joke to my cousin saying that the way the world is now, some moron is going to complain about this song. We laughed at how ridiculous it would be if someone did. And now, just one year later, I see this bullshit about the song being "rapey". You couldn't make this stuff up.

So, I'll make a prediction. Sometime in the near future, another idiot will complain about the song Santa Baby. That the woman singing is too promiscuous and that it's an insult to women to suggest that she's flirting with a married man (Santa Claus is married after all). Now, that sounds ridiculous, right? But mark my words, it will happen.

It was actually Christmastime last year when the subject matter of the song was first questioned.

Now they've escalated to actually making preachy, sanitized PC version to avoid offending the 4 people that whined about how "rapey" the song is.

Oh boy. Some people are just puritans to the core. Why doesn't the slightest 'sexual' tinged lyric offend some people.
.
Now overall I don't like "Sexy Christmas". But sexy from the 40s and 50s on a song like Santa Baby is chic and usually done tastefully.

People complaining about people complaining over this song is so old now that it's become boring. What's it been? At least ten years on now that peeps have been moaning about this? I mean, gramma got run over by a fucking reindeer, man. Where's the outrage?!

Edited to say that complaints of this song began prior to the recent metoo movement. Guess that's a new, trendy narrative to give fresh life to the "wtf is wrong with people" crowd. Head pats for all.

In fairness, we still have the original and he's welcome to try and change it as he sees fit, we'll see if it catches on. The Fairytale of New York is still the biggest Christmas song around these parts and it's got a much more problematic line it it, and I (thankfully) haven't heard the sanitized Ronan Keating version in over a decade.

Same here with regard to Baby, It's Cold Outside; to me, the song's about a man trying to get his girlfriend to stay with him at his place instead of going home because the weather is too damn cold, walking home is impossible because of the visibility, public transit might be stuck and not working, and she foists him off with her responses. However, he eventually succeeds, and she stays.

An aquaintence of mine (via this old article about said snowflakes in college/university and how they act) said it best:

I'd argue that my generation - the early to mid 30's crowd/tail end of the Gen X/Millenials are patient zero for being coddled and hermetically seal off from being offended or not having their personal whims catered to. Perfect examples of this - Starbucks and Common.

Let me say upfront that #RaceTogether was misguided at best - not because I think Howard Schultz is some insensitive 'bro' who "doesn't get it" and is mansplaining this race stuff to we silly darkies, but because like far too many progressive minded CEO in Silicon Valley, he felt he could manage a social campaign the way he can manage what flavors of sugar free syrup I can get into my morning coffee. Its a big complaint activists and NGO's have about the micromanagement style of the Gates Foundation - they can't seem to realize that they're wizardry in corporate doesn't always translate into social justice campaigns. Starbucks' "heart", I honestly believed was in the right place. It was just bad implementation.

Also Common gave kind of a goofy, let's not get too deep, answer about racism on the Daily Show. I've heard his music and my thought "Ugh, c'mon, son! You created 'Like Water for Chocolate' & 'The Electric Circus'.'" But, I also realize that he's not about to mess up his "Run All Night" money raising Black panther fist with Jon Stewart. He co-wrote "Selma" and "A Song for Assata", I can cut him some slack. He's not Kanye West. Also, he signed on a s spokesperson for the Starbucks campaign and recounted in article about how he, as a young Black guy in Chicago's South side in the mid 80's, was afraid to talk to white people in public. Oh so controversial, given that black have died for a lot less.

Now with all of that said -based upon how some SJW's (I'm looking at you Melissa Harris Perry), podcasters and millenials were railing about on Twitter, you'd think Shultz was leading the world's first Latte Klan Rally and Lonnie Lynn Jr was Stephen from 'Django'. My wife, the MSNBC weekend morning junkie, turned off MHP and watched March Madness - it was too much for her. To quote Mrs. Nicholson, "It was bunch of college professors slave crying over coffee."

You'd forgive this late 30's black guy for believing folks have lost their god damn minds about some BS. There so many more important things in the world. They're mad, not because the campaign wasn't inherently flawed - but because frankly Howard Shultz didn't personally invite Boyce Watkins and TWIB to lecture white hipsters for three weeks on racism. Oliver Willis said it best, the Far Left and the millennial activists don't know who the real enemies are and just shoot at anything that moves. Sigh, crap like this is why we may someday have to say "President Ted Cruz" or "President Rand Paul".

We've entered a time and space were people, left and right have hair trigger tempers and Star Trek communicators to telepathically blast their ravings to several billion people in less than 30 seconds.
