Madonna-Bedtime Stories appreciation

Who thinks this album is one of madonnas best? She combined pop really well with r&b and hip hop and it contains some underrated gems

This album is so beautiful. I called it rough silk. There were parts that felt like Erotica's rough street approach to vocals and production, yet there was an ongoing feeling of silky vocals, satin arrangements, and street smart attitude. It really changes from "Survival" and "Secret" to stuff like "Bedtime Story" and "Sanctuary," but comes back around with "Take A Bow."

I hope if it's ever remastered and extra tracks are added including Tupac's rap on "I'd Rather Be Your Lover."

I even made a quick spoof of the cover back in 2009 for shits and giggles. It was a very quick take. The "title" on the album was a potential title of another project at the time which never manifested.

Love the Bedtime Stories period

Such a great time in pop culture

I remember her going to a NYC night club and in her silk pajamas reading a bedtime story to the growd. When MTV was great.

This picture by Paolo Roversi was originally
intended for the cover of Bedtime Stories.

Today is the last day that I'm using words
They've gone out, lost their meaning
Don't function anymore

Let's, let's, let's get unconscious honey
Let's get unconscious honey

Today is the last day that I'm using words
They've gone out, lost their meaning
Don't function anymore

Traveling, leaving logic and reason
Traveling, to the arms of unconsciousness
Traveling, leaving logic and reason
Traveling, to the arms of unconsciousness

Chorus:

Let's get unconscious honey
Let's get unconscious
Let's get unconscious honey
Let's get unconscious

Words are useless, especically sentences
They don't stand for anything
How could they explain how I feel

Traveling, traveling, I'm traveling
Traveling, traveling, leaving logic and reason
Traveling, traveling, I'm gonna relax
Traveling, traveling, in the arms of unconsciousness

(chorus)

And inside we're all still wet
Longing and yearning
How can I explain how I feel?

(chorus)

Traveling, traveling (repeat twice)
Traveling, traveling, in the arms of unconsciousness

And all that you've ever learned
Try to forget
I'll never explain again

Notable for being her last great album that had lyrics which made sense. Her lyrical style completely changed with Ray of Light and has only gotten more and more obscure since then.

Confessions feels more like this 1993-1996 period. Confessions made sense visually, lyrically and musically. So did Music actually.

LOVE IT! Definitely her best to me, even before Ray of Light.

The Bjork influence is well heard, but I love Bjork just as much, so that's a win-win.

A very underrated, gorgeous album! One of her finest moments where she focused on the songs rather than image/controversy. The harmonies and vocals on this album are to die for! There's a woman (AJayII) on YouTube who is reviewing all of her albums in backwards order. She just did this album. Check it out... https://www.youtube.com/w...Hc7ZNlgYdQ

i was just about to post, regarding AjayII's reviews. they are hilarious, at times.

it's crazy to me to imagine that someone might not have heard all these songs
before. just like some people discovering prince right now, for the first time eek

but it's so fun to see her reactions. especially when she goes off or when she's
shocked by the lyrics lol

Love this album and her collaborations with greats including Babyface, Craig Armstrong, Dallas Austin, Dave "Jam" Hall, and Nellee Hooper. She really knocked it out of the park. I love the b-side "Let Down Your Guard" I actually jammed out to it over the weekend while playing a random playlist. A deluxe/remaster would be a welcome addition especially if it includes the 2Pac feature remastered with or without the Ndegeocello bass (I prefer it), LDYG, Your Honesty, and any other unreleased gems WB may be sitting on.

.

Also the pajama party is on YouTube if u want a trip down memory lane.

By far my favourite. I was very happy to see it reissued on vinyl as the originals were going for $200 around my area.

I would very much appreciate a deluxe version that includes 2Pac's verse on "I'd Rather Be Your Lover". Even if WB did not want to commit to a double disc and just tack that on as a bonus track.

It's gotta be the 25th anniversary of this album very soon.

Oh yeah! Actually, they would have enough to do a great deluxe edition. I still have my Secret SINGLES so I wouldn't need those remixes, but they are a staple to the era, IMO. Soulful house via Junior Vasquez I believe.

Madonna 12 - Let Down Your Guard (Unreleased From Bedtime Stories 1994)

Won't you come inside, and lay down next to my fire
Can you feel my heartbeat, let me show you my desire
First you have to tell me please, uh huh
Gonna bring you to your knees, uh huh
Gonna make you scream for more
Come inside and lock the door
And let down, let down
Let down your guard

[Chorus:]

Ahh, ah oww, come inside
Ahh, ah oww, baby it's all right (it's all right)
Ahh, ah oww, come inside
Ahh, ah oww, baby it's all right (it's all right)

This is not a one-night stand
I care for you, please understand
Baby won't you come inside
I'll take you for a little ride

I wanna touch you there, uh huh
Run my fingers through your hair, uh huh
Gonna take you for a ride
But you have to come inside
And let down, let down
Let down your guard

[chorus]

Ahh, ah oww
Ahh, ah oww (it's all right)
Ahh, ah oww
Ahh, ah oww (it's all right, it's all right, it's all right)

[verse]
[chorus]

Ahh, ah oow, cause I wanna touch you there
Ahh, ah oww, run my fingers through your hair
Ahh, ah oww, gonna take you for a ride
But you have to come inside
And let down
Let down your guard

Ahh (it's all right), ah oww, first you have to tell me please, uh huh

Should've replaced "Don't Stop" or "I'd Rather be your lover" on the track listing. I always kind of suspected it got bumped because of lyrical similarities to "That's the Way Love Goes", although that's obviously supposition.

Don't forget "Your Honesty" if we're talking Bedtime Stories outtakes--now that one was definitely album worthy and I could see worth a swap--maybe.

StrangeButTrue mentioned that. I love that track. Out of all her albums up to 1997, it seems like Bedtime Stories is the one that could be a really nice deluxe edition with extra tracks, remixes ("Secret (Junior's Luscious Club Mix)" is delicious), etc. Also, I can see the album on pink and blue vinyl, or transparent vinyl with pink and blue splatter. I do believe the album in general of often overlooked for other things like Like A Prayer or Erotica. But her dirtied down meet silky plush look was just spot on for the time.
