Seeing that list of singles makes me feel so nostalgic. I was 8 years old, only had a few tapes and CDs, but I listened to the radio constantly and I remember hearing all of those singles on the radio. I would switch between the top 40 station and the dance station (whichever one was playing Janet at the moment would usually be the one I'd listen to)... I was like a sponge memorizing all these songs on the radio-- and then sometimes they'd play a remix and I'd be listening closely to hear the differences from the original version. There was always a sense of excitement for me when these songs came on the radio, and wondering which version they were going to play. Finally, in the summer of '91, I got the album on cassette. I remember being in the parking lot outside the mall with my dad, begging him to let me buy a tape. He finally agreed and I went to Sam Goody. My first listen was on my dad's Walkman in my parents' bedroom. His Walkman was kind of old, even for that time, the buttons and headphones were kind of clunky, but I wanted to listen to the tape in private. We were about to move to a new house, so there were boxes everywhere. No one else was in the room, so it was just me having my own listening session surrounded by all these boxes. The cassette shell was black and said "CHROME" on it which looked different from any other tape I'd seen. It was also the first time I'd heard interludes on an album and having all the songs strung together in a continuous sequence. And the music was much more hip-hop influenced than anything I had listened to up to that point. It stood out from everything else at that time. And this is almost two years after the album came out that I was listening to the whole album for the first time, and it still felt new and different. Even now I think the Rhythm Nation era has its own mystique to it, from the photos to the videos to the music, it had its own "flavor". It really wasn't just an album, it was an era.

Janet Jackson - Miss You Much (Official Music Video)

The video for "Miss You Much" was directed by Dominic Sena and choreographed by Jackson and Anthony Thomas. It was filmed in August 1989 as part of the long-form Rhythm Nation 1814 film. The black-and-white video begins with dancers gathered at a pool hall, gossiping about Jackson and her boyfriend. Jackson enters the room as her dancers suddenly become quiet and look at her. One dancer asks Jackson what she has been doing lately. She jokingly responds, before demonstrating her love through song and dance. The end of the video cuts out a final dance routine performed with chairs, choreographed by Terry Bixler.

The video's choreography and chair routine are regarded as iconic in popular culture. The chair routine is available on the Rhythm Nation Compilation DVD.

What grew out of the sessions wasn't quite the straight-up topical album some remember. In addition to reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Rhythm Nation spawned seven top 10 singles, only one of which, the title track, had any kind of political leaning. The others -- "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" "Miss You Much," "Come Back to Me," "Alright" and "Black Cat" -- were relationship songs that didn't fit with trio of high-minded "message" tracks that kick off the album. The mix of personal and political, Jam says, was wholly intentional, and the album was sequenced with the heavy stuff up front.

They could have easily called it Escapade, Jam says, and swapped the stark cover shot for a nice color photo. That would have been the safe play, though the execs at A&M Records were fine with the tracklist and monochromatic presentation. In fact, Jam says, they didn't raise a single objection until Janet needed a boatload of money for the half-hour video for the title track.

"She was asking for a million bucks or whatever," Jam says. "They were like, 'We haven't heard any music.' The story was that Janet took Gil Friesen, the president at the time, in a Range Rover and drove up the Malibu coast with him and played him three or four songs. I remember she called me three or four hours later and said we got the budget. How could you not give the budget—hearing those songs, riding in a Range Rover with Janet Jackson on the PCH in Malibu?"
