I don't know how to accurately convey the enormous impact that The Cars first LP had on America. I was around six years old when it came out. I remember going to high school basektball games with my Dad and my older sister and they (the cheerleaders not my Dad and sister LOL) would be doing cheers and stomps at halftime to "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "My Best Friend's Girlfriend" and I still remember how goodlooking those cheerleaders were to a six year old boy. So much childhood stuff gets unlocked when that record comes on. Kids I knew in grade school - things that happened on the playground. Stuff from church. What my life was like - innocent - before any of my friends had died in car accidents or been murdered. What America was like before crack and AIDS and unprecedented economic polarization just ravaged the hell out of the country. Among many other things "The Cars" is a masterclass on how to segue from one musical idea to another. The segueways are just pure ecstasy. That America - the America of 1978 - is long gone, never to return but I get glimpses of it now and then when I put on "The Cars." Ah RIP, that first Cars album is one of the greatest ever albums. Their ability to seamlessly blend new wave synths and rhythms with rocknroll guitars and straight up pop harmonies was maybe only bettered by a certain Prince Rogers Nelson a few years later. [Edited 9/16/19 3:26am]

Ocasek’s wife, model and actress Paulina Porizkova, posted a statement on Instagram , saying he was “recuperating very well after surgery” and that their two sons were making sure he was comfortable. Porizkova did not say what type of surgery Ocasek was recovering from.
She says she went to bring him his Sunday morning coffee and “realized that during the night he had peacefully passed on.”

“To me, music’s a powerful emotional force,” he told Rolling Stone in 1980. “It can make people cry, feel happy or feel sexual. But more important than all of that, it’s a way to communicate without alienating people, a way to get beyond loneliness. It’s a private thing people can have for themselves any time they want. Just turn on a radio and there it is: a sense of belonging. Without having to surrender to anybody else’s needs.”

The only album of The Cars I've owned or even listened to is their brilliant Heartbeat City LP. I got their debut on my Play Store wishlist and I think now's as good a time as any to buy it. It's life but man, it's wild how so many of the biggest names that had their greatest success between the late 70s and the following decade have just been dying seemingly one after another.
