the roots!

i'm not a a big fan. i don't even know their music, but this morning i caught their video on mtv - was that tight or what? how refreshing it is to see 5 black men on stage with instruments actually playing a song they wrote: no cars, no gold, no athletic wear, no skin, no alcohol, no drug money, no sampling another record. just playing music. i didn't know mtv even played music videos anymore.
sometimes when you look at all the stuff we're inundated with everyday on mtv and vh1, you think the reality is that everyone involved in music is a playa/pimp/rapper/mack daddy, and that's all there is out there. but it's not true. i guess real music by real musicians does exists outside of prince's realm.
do any of you miss watching mtv for the videos: you know sitting there getting excited about a new band, seeing them play their stuff and getting a wide exposure to all kids of stuff. now it all seems the same ol' same ol'. maybe ten-twenty videos/artists rotated to death. and rap, rap, rap!!! it's fine for what it is, but it cannot take the place of real band with songs and instruments.

TRON

I'm not crazy about them either, but I love this new song and video. Maybe they'll change my mind.

You're talking about "The Seed 2.0" with Cody Chestnut. Me and my friend like that song. It has a good groove. I saw The Roots live last month when I went to a taping of the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. They rocked it out really hard. They give an amazing live show.

one thing that does set the roots apart from a lot of hip-hop acts is that they are a band...

they certainly offer a refreshing change from so much of the soundalike rap acts that get so much play...

their guitar-player left to play with Incubus...(?)

I saw them live a couple of weeks ago, together with Vernon Reid as a feature! They fucking rocked!
