Interesting David Ritz article about the origins of Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing', in the context of their discussions about Marvin's spiritual beliefs. It's pretty well-trodden ground, not least by Ritz himself in his Divided Soul bio, but still an enjoyable read. It's adapted from Ritz's new memoir, The God Groove: A Blues Journey to Faith, which is about music and faith in his own life as a writer.

I haven't read Ritz's book about Marvin but I own a copy of Trouble Man by Steve Turner which also explored the complexities of Marvin's beliefs about faith and sex. He was quite a complicated character overall, really, but for such a deeply wounded soul he had a frankness about him which was endearing. I'll have to dig out Turner's book and give it another read.

Thanks for posting, Divided Souls is one of my fave biography books because not only Ritz' made Marvin's words shine and they were as raw, poetic and honest as his music, but as a music geek its such an enjoyable read as it goes through plethora of great artists that either influenced, challenged or worked with Marvin.
