As much as I LOVE Janet. I give credit when it's due.Mariah is a VERY underrated songwriter. It's rare to find a woman that can sing as good as she & write her own music also. She's a triple threat! Only thing she has NO RHYTYM & can't dance. biggrin

So true, Mariah has written some great songs. Alot of people just see her as the "diva with the big voice" though. But she doesn't need to dance though, LOL.

-

Does Mariah still write her own stuff? There's no denying the quality of her earlier work.

We all know Janet is going to win around here but I much prefer Mariah's "Dreamlover". Mariah was the better singer and songwriter. But, in both cases, I don't count those particular songs amongst my favorites by either artist.

Sorry but Janet has better music. Even though Mariah had bigger hits. After the hits there’s no competition.

Dreamlover--Mariah's strong voice with the upbeat music is very compelling to hear.

Janet is a better "r&b" & "dance club" artist that Mariah aspired to be and never was...

Mariah (90-96) was a better "pop singer" that Janet never was....

The pop song featuring Janet's sensual vocals 'Let's Wait a While' the fifth single from 'Control peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

Another pop song featuring Janet's seductive vocals 'Come Back To Me"

The song reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 ( actually behind Mariah Carey's "Vision Of Love") .

The Pop single, Oscar nominated "Again" the third single from Janet's number one movie "Poetic Justice". became a commercial success, topping the US Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, while also reaching the top-ten in Canada, Sweden and the United Kingdom is another one just to name a few. So Janet qualifies as a Pop,R&B & dance club artist MANY times over.

as I said.... Mariah was more pop than r&b... Janet IMO was not as "poppy" as Mariah.... Just did some research... Janet's last top 10 hit was 2001 and Mariah's was 2009...

"That's The Way Love Goes" by Merle Haggard over "Dreamlover" by Bobby Darin, but not by much. Both are classics.

Was does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Also Janet had a minor hit with "Made For Now" just last year. It also topped the US Dance Club Songs chart, becoming Janet's 20th number one single.

well the tea in Chinas is proving my first point... a new generation of music listeners are out there and they want Selena and Ariande. Music business isn’t built for artists over 40.... people say ohhh charts don't matter...sales don't matter.... that's BS, artists like these probably come at a hefty price tag...if a record company doesn't get their ROI.... one word will be spoken.... "dropped"... also....that minor hit you speak of peaked at #88 on the Top !00 chart...just saying....

Next year when Janet releases her new album. She will be the first act to achieve a No. 1 album in each of the last five decades.

But the real money now is in touring. That artist over 40 has locked down now. Janet's sold out residency in Vegas proved that. Plus making up her canceled dates she promised after getting pregnant in the middle of her successful Unbreakable tour at FIFTY YEARS OLD.

Yes! We agree on something! Please know I don’t dislike Janet or Mariah! These young artists can only dream of having careers as these two pioneers

Yeah she really is, her great voice for many overshadows the writing process. I always love reading about artists writing process behind the music.

I wish I could watch Mariah’s Butterfly album special that aired on vh1 back in the day, but can’t find it
