Some love for 80s Rod Stewart So the last year and a half I’ve become a pretty big Fan of rod the mop. Of course his early albums like every picture tells a story are amazing rock albums and his best artistically. But I feel like his 80s period gets dismissed a lot which sucks cause in my opinion he had some of the best hit songs of the decade.
Don’t get me wrong he released some meh albums but he had some killer singles and deep cuts. Young Turks Passion Baby Jane (my favorite) She won’t dance with me Tonight I’m yours Infatuation Never give up on a dream Forever young Lost in you I know some of his hits like love touch are pretty bad (those marimbas are awfbut I much prefer it to the shitty covers albums he’s done most of the 00s. but what do y’all thing of Rods 80s era? I loved baby jane since I was a kid, but don’t really know his other 80s songs, or at least which decade some are from, like forever young [Edited 8/1/19 8:34am]

I've been a huge fan of Rod's since the 1970's and I still listen to his music today. He was definitely in his prime in the 70's & 80's, but for a guy in his mid-seventies, he still sounds great. I've seen him perform at least a dozen times and he has always put on a great show. His anthology that came out in the 90's is chocked full of amazing songs. We listen to it often and there is no doubt in my mind that he is an icon and a very important part of music history.

I recently bought his 2 cd greatest hits. I always thought he was underrated. This guy calls him Master Rod Stewert. This photo was taken in 1991. What inspired “Holding On to You,” which is such a beautiful song?
I am a big admirer of the great Rod Stewart, another famous disciple of Maestro Sam Cooke’s. He was looking for a song to finish a project at the time but before I could get it together, his label called the deadline. It was written for him to sing, which I would have considered a great honor. At that time, however it seemed as if I were being quarantined and kept back from the space I earned by following my God’s law. It was also a way to convince me that my luck had changed. I noticed how soon my luck reverted to form after I got rid of those types in my life. The consolation is that I got to keep the song.= = = = = =

Rod had some great songs in the 70s...and some good ones in the '80s, too. Glad to see him out there doing his thing. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Another gem is "My heart can't tell you no"! "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Yes and I also love "Crazy Bout Her", "Love Touch" and other songs already listed in this thread from the 80s, ("Passion" is my hands down fave) and of course the 70s music from him are absolute classics . I have always been a Rod Stewart fan. [Edited 8/2/19 13:25pm] Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above~

Love Rod Stewart but the 80s is when I started to fade in interest.

Rod even had an excellent disco hit,”Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” in 1979....proving that he could easily venture out of his rick n’ roll comfort zone.

So you consider the 2 songs it copied (Bobby Womack ~ Put Something Down On It / Jorge Ben ~ Taj Mahal) crimes too? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Also love that chorus of baby jane! I watched the video just now after over 25 years and now I actually get what it’s about. He’s getting over being in love with a prostitute, right?

The difference in Do Ya Think I'm Sexy and the other songs is that Rod's song is synth based. Rod even mentioned the Jorge Ben song in his autobiography. He said he heard it when he went to South America to watch a soccer match. The chorus melody comes from Taj Mahal (released in 1972) and the main synth line comes from the string arrangement on Bobby's 1975 song. It's not a big secret that Rod is a fan of soul/R&B music. He patterned his vocal style from Sam Cooke, so did Steve Perry from Journey. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Heard Rod Stewart on The Howard Stern Show and Stewart wrote the song Forever Young but because Bob Dylan also wrote a song called Forever Young Dylan gets part of the publishing from Stewart's song even though he had nothing to do with it.

The songs are quite similar. Listen to both and you can't miss the similarities.
