Art Neville passes

New Orleans music legend Art Neville, a founder of the Meters and Neville Brothers, dies at 81

Art “Poppa Funk” Neville shaped the sound of New Orleans music for a half-century. The keyboardist and singer co-founded the Meters and the Neville Brothers, two of the most important bands to come from the city, and was the voice of the enduring Carnival season anthem “Mardi Gras Mambo.”

Heard this news last night. Very sad. My husband and I are big fans of all the Neville brothers. They made some amazing, beautiful music.

RIP Art.

The Soul Queen of New Orleans on Art Neville

https://time.com/5634776/...t-neville/

Irma Thomas Remembers Father of Funk Art Neville

Before the Neville Brothers became a group, Art Neville had his own little group called the Hawketts. This was back in the 1950s, and I was basically just getting started. Artists like me, who didn’t have their own bands, would work with various groups around New Orleans. Wherever we had gigs where the Hawketts were the backup band, Art–who died on July 22 at 81–was always the guy who wanted to get it right. They were a very popular local group in Louisiana, and over the years I watched him grow...

...And there is no music called soul or funk that Art Neville and his brothers didn’t contribute to in some way.

Art Neville, the soft-spoken keyboard maestro who helped formulate New Orleans funk in the 1960s and ’70s, will receive a musical send-off befitting the co-founder of the world-renowned Meters and Neville Brothers on Tuesday (July 30th).

A public memorial service will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave. A second-line will begin outside the funeral home at 3:30 p.m., a family member said.

This service will likely have lots of great music. Charmaine Neville, Charles' daughter, is a beautiful singer and tireless social activist in the city. She sang at a funeral I attended once for a friend's mother, at Rhodes Funeral Home with other luminaries performing. It blew me away. So personal too.
