Montrose. Montrose is right. Their debut album was the first heavy metal gold album in history.

Jimi Hendrix arguably re-invented rock and roll itself.

That's enough for me.

What about Helter Skelter by The Beatles?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Here's Space Cowboy by Johnny Guitar Watson released in the early 1950s

That may be the real grandfather tune--just saw TTB play that one last month.

Queen pioneered the sound in the early 70's.

Early records Queen I and II kinda prove it. The sound is unmistakeable.

Going to go with the artists who created and were influenced to create heavy metal.

Putting less credibility in a scripted television show but Sopranos is right about a lot in life so...

Not even sure that the bands themselves have ever claimed the genre.

"Heavy Metal" the term invented by Lester Bangs according to a few sources, who knew?
