On a related note, 1 of Tito's kids & 2 of Mike's have a channel on Youtube where they talk about movies & movie trailers - Film Family. Jermaine's son Jaafar has a new single called Got Me Singing.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

First of all - that name! eek

Second, Jaafar went to Brazil to film his video, so it's a nice harken back to "They Don't Care About Us". He sounds a bit like his daddy, which - why wouldn't he? It's a cute song, but I'm not humming it or anything.

Jermaine is Muslim. I guess it has something to do with that. The villian in Disney's Aladdin is named Jafar too, just without the extra "A". Jermaine has a Muslim name himself (so do the Bell brothers in Kool & The Gang), but has never legally changed it like Muhammad Ali did. I don't know where he got Jermajesty (another son) from though. I guess it came from the same book of names as Dweezil, Moon Unit, & Zowie Bowie. razz

Yeah well Jermaine also wanted to change his last name to Jacksun or something equally stupid. Jermagesty is retarded, plain and simple.

But if Jaafar starts stenciling his hairline, I'm done.

That was a publicity stunt like the story about his brother buying Joseph Merrick bones. But Islamic names aren't made up, they're given to the person, and are generally of Arabian origin. Jafar/Jaafar/Ja'far are all the same Arabic name with different spellings, just like Tony/Toni are. Just because a name isn't European does not mean it's a bad name. You think Africans brought over to be slaves in North & South America had names like Jermaine & Jackson?

I don't always buy the publicity stunt trope. People do a stunt for a specific reason, to purposely generate attention for something bigger (and often unrelated). WTF is Jermaine doing that needs a stunt as a booster?

And thanks, but I understand Islamic naming, etc. I never said the other names were made up or weren't. I said Jermagesty was a retarded name, no matter where it came from. I'm not even sure that's Islamic, more like Isheserioius. lol

Still laying odds on that Sharpie drawn baby hair though. hhahahaha

Yeah me too. But those are quite niche and probably under the radar for the general public. I am just glad They Don't Care About Us got such a huge post-humous popularity. I think that song meant a lot to him and he worked on it for quite a long time. If I remember correctly he initially came up with it during the Bad sessions.

Edit: I have just noticed the Who Is It streams. That's a disgrace. To me, that is THE song of his career.

I'm Arabic, and my great grandfather's name was Jafar (pronounced Ga'far), means "holy water" or "water from the heavens".

It's a very traditional Muslim name.
