Missy Elliott to Receive Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at 2019 VMAs (EXCLUSIVE)

missyvanguard-jpg.977138

Rapper, producer and songwriter Missy Elliott will receive MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on Aug. 26 at the 2019 VMAs, Variety has learned exclusively, where she will perform live at the awards show for the first time in 16 years.

“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” said Bruce Gillmer, MTV International co-brand head and Viacom music and music talent head. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

Elliott, a five-time Grammy Award winner and the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, has sold more than 30 million records worldwide, thanks to hits like “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “WTF (Where They From).” She is the only female rapper to have six studio albums certified platinum.

I remember when I attended Missy's reality show "The Road to Stardom With Missy Elliott" in 2004 that was co hosted by my favorite female singer the late Teena Marie(whom I last chatted with a week prior to her passing). I told Missy her triple threat talent reminded me a lot of Teena she was honored by the compliment.

BTW: Missy's is making a comeback.....

Missy's vids were state of the art. Congrats to her for finally getting some of her due!

Of the recent names that have received the award, Missy is definitely most worthy of it.

Good for her. I'm surprised she hadn't received it already.

Just trying to think of the last time she released a video or a song (probably yesterday for all I know). She deserves the award for what she and I think Hype Willliams did anyway. I liked the work it video that had the (bad) Prince impersonation in it.

She really did push technology with some of her videos twenty years ago. I was just watching Missy videos night before last. There is just never a dull moment in them. I also love her tributes to Aaliyah and Left Eye in more than one video.

This recognition is long overdue.

Michael Jackson Accuser Wade Robson Criticizes MTV’s ‘Unfortunate Choice’ to Keep Jackson’s Name on Vanguard Award (Exclusive)

Wade Robson, who detailed sexual abuse accusations against Michael Jackson in the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” said it is “unfortunate” that MTV will keep the pop icon’s name on its Video Vanguard Award at this year’s VMAs.

The network announced Monday that Missy Elliott will be the latest recipient of the award, which was named for Jackson in 1991, before the first molestation accusations against him surfaced in 1993. Robson and another man, James Safechuck, reignited the discussion around Jackson when they spoke at length for the documentary.

“I don’t personally need MTV to do one thing or the other, but as child abuse survivors all over the world watch to see whether society will support them or not if they have the courage to come forward, in that regard, it’s an unfortunate choice,” Robson told TheWrap Monday.

MTV did not immediately respond to requests for comment about its decision to keep Jackson’s name on the award, which it described in a news release Monday as the “VMAs’ highest honor.”

The network began handing out the Video Vanguard Award in 1984, when the VMAs were still known as the Video Music Awards. Past recipients have included Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Rihanna, and P!nk.

Jackson was acquitted of child molestation in a 2005 trial involving another minor. The singer also settled another child molestation accusation in 1993. Jackson, who died in 2009, always denied any inappropriate behavior, and his family has denounced the HBO documentary.

This fake “victim” did a Michael Jackson tribute at the MTV AWARDS after Michael died. For TWO DECADES he has praised Michael and said nothing but good things about him. He testified in court and proclaimed under oath that he had never been abused by Michael. He testified as a GROWN man. He did all of this until he was denied the job as choreographer for Michael’s ONE show in Vegas. He SUDDENLY decided he had been “abused”, and sued MJ Estate for 1.5 billion AFTER Michael’s death, 10 years ago. ROBson is a sick, desperate, psychopathic piece of trash who is an extortionist trying to get money because he is broke and NO ONE in the dance community wants anything to do with this creep.Upchuck is another pathetic and broke creep who jumped on ROBson’s extortion bandwagon.

Congrats to Missy! Very well deserved and long overdue. Her video "I Can't Stand the Rain" is one of my absolute faves to come out of the 90s.

Exactly! I thought of 10 years ago as well. If it happened, why on earth would mj have called him as a first witness, he’s such a jerkoff

This recognition is long overdue.

Indeed it is.

It is also truly baffling how the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Beyonce and fucking Jennifer Lopez have received this award, especially before Missy Elliott, someone who actually made an impact on the medium of the music video and fashioned an identity all her own through it.

At best, the others' videos were well produced, some being entertaining but nothing special, much less even close to the realms of innovative, amazing or remarkable.

Timberlake has had some interesting videos, though. "Cry Me A River" directly attacked Britney Spears, and it there was a LOT of buzz around it. But even past that, his videos go beyond the Prince-esque performance only stuff. I do think he's probably deserving of it. I don't know, nor care, about Rihanna's videos. P!NK has had some interesting stuff, as well. She's easily in the mix. Beyonce deserves it on some level. Lopez - meh. I do try to look at videos as an artform, and some of these artists named above have taken the same approach, whether it's special effects, storytelling, an overall aesthetic, or whatever. They've taken it beyond just singing the song in different scenes, and created stories or vignettes provoking a reaction.

As far as Missy - whoa. I'll be watching that segment for sure. I actually hope Janet shows up to present it. Besides Timbaland, I don't know who else should.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

It's about damn time! This is so long overdue. Missy should have gotten this over a decade ago. I hope her good friend Janet Jackson presents her with the honor. Hell it's only right since she has stated that Janet and MJ inspired her to make great videos.

It's a travesty that MTV only gave Missy SEVEN MINUTES to perform this year after YEARS of purposely overlooking her for The MJ Vanguard award. Only after people criticized them for not recognizing her after her GROUNDBREAKING videos for ALL those years. Then they decided to honor her. But then they give that person 15 MINUTES to perform last year. SMH

Who won last year again?

Yes, I'm too lazy to look it up.
