I see a lot of albums posted here that fit into that category. Spice Girls, MJ's Invincible, Brittany Spears! All these albums sold over a million copies. The subject of this thread is gems that fell through the cracks not guilty pleasures.

"Masterpiece Theatre" from En Vogue. It's a fantastic CD, that I think only I and their mamas bought. It's a shame because the harmonies are so tight, and there's a suite of songs called the love suite that are truly spectacular.

***Earth Wind and Fire 'Electric Universe'(1983)---This album was disliked by many critics and fans.It was the album that broke up the band.Even Maurice White, the band's leader, doesn't think much of it.But I like it.It took them in a whole new direction. They abandoned the horns, kalimbas and other EW&F trademarks and opted for a more aggressive, synth-heavy New Wave pop sound (like many other R&B bands were doing at the time).Highlights include the blazing first single "Magnetic",the mesmerizing midtempo jam "Touch" and two of their finest ballads ever,"Could It Be Right" and "We're Living In Our Own Time".

One EWF fan to another, that album really was a disappointment. I remember seeing the video for "Magnetic" before the album was released and just sat there with my mouth open. I was like "what the hell was that" Cause it damn sure wasn't EWF. Now I agree with "Touch" and "We're Living In Our Own Time" as being great songs but over all that album deserves a place in the EWF hall of shame right along with "Heritage" And speaking of Heritage, I knew it was all bad at Columbia when they teamed them up with The Boys and Hammer. It never thought I would hear the real EWF again after that but pleasantly surprised when Millennium came out. Thinking back, EWF has been back from the dead more than once. After "I AM" "Faces" bombed (although I like the album) but they bounced back with "Raise" But I digress. David, I smell another thread here lol

If you mean albums that didn't sell well (or at all) I'd have to go with...

Cher- "Stars". This album did terribly but is considered a classic by fans so I don't know if that fits the description. This album isn't even on CD!

Now an album that sold semi-well but was hated by most fans that I love is...

Ozzy Osbourne-"Down to Earth". A lot of fans hated this one and thought Ozzy should give it up but I would rather here this album on the radio than Kelly's "Papa Don't Preach". The album went Gold (probably only becuase it shipped a lot of copies) but I don't think it sold very well considering his track record.

I'm sure there are others and hopefully I'll post again when I think of a few more.

Janet Jackson "All for You" was a platinum album. I'm talkin'albums that didn't even hit gold.

I understand what Moonbeam means.

1. It didn't sell as well as it could have. Stupid Virgin for only releasing 3 singles.
2. A lot of fans really hated it (although I think its also my favorite of hers), thus making it an album he liked but nobody else did.

I got the topic now.

Maddy's 1st LP is the most underrated LP IMHO becoz the middle men got shocked by the fact that Radio Stations mistaken her as a black woman. Plus, it has a good RnB vibe into it and plus its the least commercial LP by her. Add the fact that she did the set like she wasn't expecting anything, she wasn't that hip when she did it like she did the rest of the 80's LPs(except Like A Prayer).

I remember hearing Madonna for the very first time.It was in 1983.Our local Black/R&B station began playing the song "Holiday" and I thought she was Black! Later, when I saw this blonde chick on the album cover,I was like "Wow!".That first album is still fun to listen to,but I'm much more into her new music.

Ray Of Light is the one that made me take her seriously. I loved the whole creepy/edgy/dark atmosphere in the LP, "Littel Star" is my all time FAVE song by her. I bought all of her LPs after that and when "Music" came out I lost my intrest on her.

However, being the sistah of a very huge fan(my older sistah) I had to watch her lastest Tour DVD which is very intresting. But I have to admit that she neva fails 2 impress me when I saw her "Amercian Life" video, I loved the part that featured the Arabic Kids walking,,,thats right there a hard ass slap on the face.

Ok we have all had those albums that we just fell in love with but we had a hard time finding others who shared our passion. These albums could be from unknown or well-established acts but for one reason or another they not only didn't sell well but were largely ignored by everyone. Curious to see if anyone matches on this. A few of mine are:

LA Connection (Cameo produced funk group from early 80's)
Change - Change of Heart (Jam & Lewis produced)
Angel Grant (another Jam and Lewis effort)
Steve Arrington - Positive Power (second solo effort)
Prince - The Rainbow Children (besides die-hards who heard this?)
Prince - Emancipation (see above)
The System - Midnight Special (late 80's)
Slave - Steppin Out (First post-Steve Arrington album)
Every Starpoint Album before the release of "Object of My Desire"

Digable Planets -- Blowout Comb
Downtown Science -- Downtown Science
KMD -- Mr. Hood
Prince -- Lovesexy
Res -- How I Do
De La Soul -- Stakes Is High

just to name a few . . .
