Billie Eilish -- "Wish You Were Gay" (REVIEW)

I just discovered this song. I love this song. This song is brilliant. Chord progression is sweet, simplebut effective and catchy. The lyrics and how they are sang is what makes the song.

“Baby, I don't feel so good
Six words you never understood
I'll never let you go
Five words you'll never say (aw)
I laugh alone like nothing's wrong
Four days has never felt so long
If three's a crowd and two was us
One slipped away”

So immediately you notice the song counts down from six. It was Finneas’s (Billie Eilish’s brother) who came up with the idea to use numbers to represent the 12 steps it took for Billie to get over someone. Kinda like how there’s 12 steps for alcoholics or any addicts to get over an obsession.

“Is there a reason we're not through?
Is there a 12 step just for you?
Our conversation's all in blue
11 'Heys' (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
Ten fingers tearing out my hair
Nine times you never made it there
I ate alone at 7, you were six minutes away”

It isn’t until the second verse we start to count down from 12. Smart decision, it works better this way considering the lyrics and it’s more creative rather than being like that rubbish “12 days of Christmas.” Cool lyric where she basically texts the guy “Hey” 11 times, and of course the conversation is “all in blue” because she’s the only one typing. Kinda sad. There’s a behind the scenes video where she says doing this sucks so it’s based on a true story.

“To spare my pride
To give your lack of interest an explanation
Don't say I'm not your type
Just say that I'm not your preferred sexual orientation
I'm so selfish
But you make me feel helpless, yeah
And I can't stand another day
Stand another day...”

And here’s where she basically further clears the meaning behind the ‘wish you were gay’ line. This verse/bridge (ig) is beautifully sang too.

“I just wanna make you feel okay
But all you do is look the other way, mm
I can't tell you how much I wish I didn't wanna stay
I just kinda wish you were gay”

Very nice concept for a song. Usually when homosexuality is mentioned in music it’s either “coming out” or something of that sort. And when people first hear the title they first think, “I guess the singer wishes the other was gay so they can be happy together.”
But it’s neither of those. It goes a fresh and interesting route. Like “I wish you were gay so you have an actual reason not to be in to me, ‘cause I’m the shit” type of thing. So it’s a good mix of quirkiness, comedy, heart and sadness in one track. Really good. This is the best Billie Eilish song so far.
