Wrangler Responds To Threats Of Boycott After Partnership With Rapper

Wrangler is responding to boycott threats and backlash to its new partnership with rapper Lil Nas X, which critics on social media claim is abandoning the clothing brand's country music and cowboy-style roots.

Wrangler is known for its iconic jeans, which are highlighted in art outside its headquarters on Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro, N.C. This week, Wrangler announced a new clothing collection with Lil Nas X that includes jeans and shirts.

I never realized Wrangler was only for white cowboys.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I love how in a country with as many real problems as America, this is what people complain about. Some rapper nobody's ever heard of is advertising jeans and people are up in arms about it, lol. Crazy. It's OK though, if Wrangler want to get their customers back, all they need to do is offer a promotion whereby you get 50% off your next gun purchase and the cowboys will come moseying on back.

How many people actually complained and how many are actually are doing a boycott?

I feel like a lot of newsarticles just use what some twitter users say and make it an article.

This is just symptomatic of a real problem in this country. I'm sure you know which problem I'm referring to as well...

I do. I would have gone further in my original post but I didn't want to get it moved to the P&R forum.

Exactly and glad this is what is being pointed out. This is constantly the case with these boycotts and no one boycotts anything it’s just useless hashtag BS to get hits and clicks on wack news pages and bloggers and people’s own pages. This was all pointed out about a year ago on the Bill Maher show in his segment of new rules about FAKE outrage, and he used all these kind of stories and even the whole Prince halftime scandal with Timberlake that was not a scandal and no one honestly gave a crap. So I see these fake boycotts pop up all the time and I just scroll down, it’s all BS that gets no type of attention outside of the ten minutes that people read it.

The "cancel culture / cultural appropriation / woke" & "anti-SJW / MAGA" generation probably does. It's ironic that Hollywood is currently into making diversity entertainment, when a lot of the public is into self segregation.

It´s interesting how one brand can be associated with a certain group of customers for a while and then be discovered by another group later.

For example, Lee jeans are very much part of early (and true) HipHop culture, Wranglers were worn by rap group Public Enemy in the late 80s, early 90s, and Levis were not really "cool" in the Hip Hop scene until Eazy E, IceCube and NWA made them more popular among rap fans, whereas previously Levis were associated with James Dean, Brad Pitt, RockNRoll etc.

Or Timberland boots which became a must-have in the rap scene of the early 90s even though the brand itself did not want to be associated with urban youth and rap.

This is what happens when you have a nation of people who couldn't critically think themselves out of a paper bag with a detailed map.

Throw in a truck gun rack and a pack of chewing tobacco, sold! Needless to say...

I've feed into a stereotype but its just as ridiculous to think Wrangler makes jeans only for the cowboy / Country Western set. My daughter told me some dim-wits accused this guy of cultural appropriation. Uh, 30% of American cowboy's were Black. History, geography, and math have never been our strongest subjects in US. lol lol lol

Wrangler still makes 100% cotten jeans: If Wrangler fit my ass in all the right places, I'd buy a pair. lol

Good Lord.

Nothing against Wrangler but they just aren't stylish but I'd wear the hell out of em to cut

A lot of cowboys in the old west were Mexican & black. Most of the southern USA was originally Mexico. The idea of only white cowboys mainly came from Hollywood movies & TV shows and pulp novels. Today there are still black rodeos & trail riders. The banjo originated in Africa and what became known as the slide guitar sound came from traditional Hawaiian music. Both country & blues copied the Hawaiian sound.

Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, rules the Billboard Hot 100 for a 16th week, tying the record for the most time tallied at No. 1 in the chart's six-decade history.

"Road" matches Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, and Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," which spent a record 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2017 and 1995-96, respectively.

Let's run down the top 10 of the newest Hot 100 (dated July 27), which blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and digital sales data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (July 23).
