Roger Friedman Says Beyonce Has "No Soul"

Bey fans discovered this tweet after Roger tried to insult her again. It's from 2016.

He tweeted this around the same time he wrote this article about Lemonade.

Beyonce is the popular person to knock on lately... and in the past.

She's since deleted it, but the screen cap is real. It's amazing that, even if someone dislikes Beyonce or anyone, that they'd stoop to that level of stupid. Of course, this month she's all pro-Bey after Beychella. Which means she's either been englightened to humanity, or she's a clout chaser.

Trolls on the internet are disgusting and jealousy is an ugly thing. Whether you're a fan of Beyonce's or not, these type of comments are just plain sick.

Well, he's right.

Mainstream criticism of Beyonce didn't really become a thing till her "anti-police" performance at the Super Bowl. White conservatives used that as an excuse to imply if not outright say that Beyonce is racist. It was stupid then and it's still stupid now. That criticism, however, is in the extreme minority compared to the unrealistic amounts of praise she gets.

The admiration for Beyonce has spiraled so out of control that now we have articles berating people for calling her overrated. Are these fools really so blind in their exultation of this woman they can't see that they're only validating the very opinion they're trying to discredit?

I agree. Her music is generally over produced, overtly machine sounding, lacking dynamics, devoid of humanity and reliant on image, IMO. The antithesis to music like D’angelo, which is modern soul music.

True. It's all very competent, current, slickly produced, sassy, cleverly attuned to the buttons her audience likes being pushed, etc, but I find it completely unmoving. And she's one of many current singers for whom 'emoting' simply means getting louder (though, in fairness, not the worst offender).

I think she shows her soul through her goal of focusing on the empowerment of black women both in culture and in their relationships with men. The actual music that she makes to convey this message doesn't seem to have enough vulnerbility and sponteneity to feel soulful. Nevertheless, the film of her Coachella performance was enjoyable!

Exactly....overrated, overhyped and overexposed. Everything about her is so

fake, and her fans are on the level of MJ, Mariah & Elvis fans as far as craziness.

I've never seen an Elvis fan. And as crazy as many MJ fans are, the Beyhive ranks far above the worst of his fanbase. As far as Mariah fans go, I haven't seen how bad they can apparently be but they rank below Eminem, Kanye and classic rock fans and especially the Beyhive.

I have yet to see articles from the mainstream press that insult people who claim Michael, Mariah, Elvis, Eminem, Kanye, The Beatles or The Stones to be overrated.

Well damn Be' wouldn't be the 1st in line. lol lol lol

Most of the shit being played is Soulless, irrespective of genre. If you move away far away from Billboard and charts, there's a lot of good music being performed and recorded around the world.

NPR Tiny Desk... has kinda brought my deep love and passion to music back. A lot of stuff good stuff out here.

Right, but she's a pop singer. A black pop singer, like Diana Ross, but that doesn't mean she has to make soul music. She can do pop, and that's alright. Loads of ppl like her, so fair play to her.
