EWF or P-Funk? 70s FUNK FANS SPEAK UP!!!

In regards to 70s R&B/Funk, there seem to be 2 schools of thought among us hardcore fans- a preference for Earth Wind & Fire along with affiliated/associated/similar sounding groups and Parliament/Funkadelic although most of us have plenty of love for both.

*

So which camp are you in? Me, I can go on and on for days about EWF but I'm down with the Funk Mob first and foremost.

*

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Oh Lord here we go. Not messing with this one. Muggs know exactly how I feel. All I can say is get Maurice or Phillip’s book and read their accounts of what happened in Chocolate City about 1972.

P-Funk were/ are specialists in funk, but can convincingly do other styles.

EWF did/ can do funk convincingly, but by no means only play funk. They also had that whole cosmic spiritual afro-latin jazz thang.

A list of classic funk jams for P-Funk would imo be far far longer than one for EWF.

Love them both though. Overall, my preference is for the P cos they're so 'far round'!! cool

EWF is my choice but they were, and I know I'm making this term up, "prog-funk." Parliament produced raw uncut funk.

If you're asking who's the funkiest between the two...Then Parliament it is...
If you're asking who's overall better?
Then it's EWF...

Parliament is primarily a jam band..
doing a mashup of James Brown meets sci-fi comic book/spaced out funk..
Funkadelic is a Psychedelic Soul Rock band..
Their sound has a harder edge to them than EWF..

But I love the fact that EWF is nore accessible to the audience..
Classier songs..classier albums
Injecting jazz,rock,funk,pop..gospel,african,latin rhythms..disco..Crafting these songs..melodies and harmonies..
Maurice and Philip is a hard combination that can't be beat..
The only group that is more comparable to EWF is Kool and the Gang..as far as doing accessible music..and being popular for it.
Kool could do funk,rock,disco,pop,jazz..

Mothership Connection is Parliament's greatest accomplishment/crowning achievement as far as im concerned..
Bootsy,Brides, Parlet and Horny horns are very good records...but nothing was as good as mothership hitting on all cylinders..
Although Strechin out and Placebo syndrome albums came close..but not on that level.

Funkadelic's biggest song depending on who you ask is probably One nation under a groove or Knee Deep..which is closer to a Parliament song..

Maurice's voice just offered reassurance and confidence to me...All about love was a prime example of that..
That's the way of the world album changed my life and the way I listened to music..

EWF music just makes me feel good..good vibes..electric through the speakers..
Also the people EWF produced..or associated with
Ramsey Lewis,The Emotions,Deniece Williams,Dj Rogers...
Larry Dunn branching off and producing Caldera,Ronnie Laws..Twennynine with Lenny White..Stanley Turrentine's 1981 record..
Verdine producing the Pockets..
The Phenix horns sprinkled on other people's albums..

EW&F was definately the best Funk band of the 70's. I never cared for Parliment.

As I said,I hate the idea of comparing these bands smile but I gotta give the edge to EW&F for this one thing: slow jams. They have some of the best slow jams of all time.P-Funk has a few but they don’t have something like a “Reasons” in their catalog.

I've heard almost all EWF albums.. some of it is very good, but I never considered it funk per se. It's always something else, with some funk sprinkled on. Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, Pop...

.

ParliaFunkadelicMent thang on the other hand was funk at the basis and they had all kinds of other stuff over the top, including a rock side that EWF never really developed (or I missed it).

.

As to who's better? Who cares, sometimes I feel like one and not the other, sometimes the other way around and sometimes neither and I want something else. cool

.

Full disclosure, I do have the complete P-Funk catalog up to 1985 or so, and not nearly a complete set of EWF albums, so I guess that says something too.

Yeah, this is kind of an apples and oranges thing....and yet...

...Marcus Miller once said of EWF, "growing up..they were like, our Beatles.."

So, are George Clinton and P-Funk the Rolling Stones of this comparison?

I have much respect for EWF. Although both bands in the prime of it were masters of the forms of what they did, EWF had a much slicker, smoother sound. That chyt was formulated to go pop. Crossover. Polished. I can only take the hits in small doses before they wear on me. Start sounding the same. The older it is the bigger dose i can take because its rawer. Chyt, Serpentine Fire and Mighty, Mighty is 2 of the funk bombs of all time.

Although Clinton could go smooth when he wants to, P-Funk was anything but. Especially live. Underground, raunchy and raw. That chyt wasn't trying to crossover in any way.
